You might try using an SD card instead of a USB stick. I believe the 15r is capable of booting from the card reader. Whether it would work or not for installing Lion, I'm not sure... but it might be worth a shot.
Of course, I don't know what kind of bus the card reader is on. If it uses...

Hmmm... yes... that could be a problem. My 14r has a dedicated USB 2.0 port and an eSATA/USB 2.0 port in addition to a couple of USB 3.0 ports. The USB 3.0 ports wouldn't work during the install. Of course, I wasn't doing the Unibeast method, either.

You should be able to copy the installer to another drive so you won't have to re-download.
Also, for that processor, cpus=2 busratio=25... that may help.
