Unable to access the BIOS (Gigabyte X58A-UDR3 MB - FF)

*** SIGH *** Nevermind. I forgot that I'm using an APPLE keyboard, which incorrectly labels the backspace key as "delete", I forgot about the *real* "Delete" key that hangs out next to the "home/end/page up/page down" keys... Of course the "insert" key is renamed "help" on this one, so that...

Unable to access the BIOS (Gigabyte X58A-UDR3 MB - FF)

Correction... it seems attempting to use *any* of the F-key commands or the delete key at boot results in the immediate shutdown and restart. I already swapped the keyboard to different usb ports, but no luck there....

Unable to access the BIOS (Gigabyte X58A-UDR3 MB - FF)

Very recently, my custom built Hackintosh setup (X58A-UDR3 rev2 / FF BIOS / 3.2 GHz Core i7 970) has not been able to access the BIOS by holding the DELETE key at boot up when instructed. Whenever I attempt to do so, the system cuts the power and reboots like a bad overclock setting was...

    CPU Voltage Settings (Core i7 970 / gigabyte UD3R)

btw... you have a pretty good looking setup. Mine is a bit more subtle, like the Powerbook from the late 90's.

    CPU Voltage Settings (Core i7 970 / gigabyte UD3R)

No problem! Actually, aside from the actual hardware build, this was one of the simplest hacintosh builds I've done. My earlier ones were all commercial machines with wildly random specs. A setup where you control the specs directly is far easier to setup. Of course, none of this would be...

Lazy ATX Mac Pro case hack

I like the power supply mounted at the top there. One thing about these G5/Mac Pro cases is that they are very vulnerable to accidents involving liquids. My G5 got defiled by my sister's cat a couple months ago. While I'm confident I managed to catch it before any run-off made it to the power...

    CPU Voltage Settings (Core i7 970 / gigabyte UD3R)

This might be of some use to others out there who are trying to overclock their core i7 units. It's a map of the components that uses terminology similar to that in the BIOS:

Carbon copy cloner restore error - Help please?

Hmm... was the drive you were using a dual boot setup Mac/Windows? It sounds like the drive may not have been set up correctly with the right partition table. If I remember correctly, any version of Mac OS X from 10.4 up requires a drive to be formatted as GUID in order to boot from it. (This...

    CPU Voltage Settings (Core i7 970 / gigabyte UD3R)

Thanks for the advice, colonel. I think I'm finally getting it after watching over the BIOS's automatic settings changes with my CPU multiplier/bclk entries. I think one issue I was having was a mix-up in the limits of the core and uncore voltages. Had i kept going blindly, I might well have...

    CPU Voltage Settings (Core i7 970 / gigabyte UD3R)

Ok, so I decided to try approaching this problem from the opposite direction, by setting everything to auto and simply watching what the bios does on it's own. (After all, if it managed 4.5GHz before, it should still work now...) What I'm learning, is that none of the settings posted above...

    Antec 300 Midtower

The Antec 300 midtower casing is a fairly decent starting point for a first time build. It's roughly the same footprint and weight of a G5/Mac Pro case and offers similar, if not better, accessibility and air flow to Apple's own design. The Antec 300 is a steel construction with a removeable...

    CPU Voltage Settings (Core i7 970 / gigabyte UD3R)

So, any advice on voltage adjustments for my i7 970? I've pretty much got most of this overclocking thing down already, but the voltage settings are still throwing me off. So far, I've gotten things up to 4.3GHz with a BCLK of 189 (23x CPU) without too many problems, but the only voltage...

    Sealed Water Cooling Kits

Using a Corsair H50 unit here on my core i7 970 (rated for 3.2GHz). Can run it at around 4.25GHz with no ill effects at around 61°C under a full load. (Tested with Prime95 torture test, 12 threads at once...) I was getting about 87°C using a massive air cooled aluminum/copper block with dual...

<SOLVED> App Store / itunes Wierdness (Handy tip in replies)

Wow, I actually just went rounds with this problem on my setup a little bit ago. Thankfully it's such a minor issue. (I was getting worried I'd have to tear down my bios settings one by one to fix it...)

    New To System Building... Recommendations?

    Wow... sorry about getting back to you. Here's a rough rundown: - intel Core i7 970 (6 core @ 3.2GHz) - Gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r motherboard - Gigabyte 1GB Radeon 5770 video card - antec 300 mid-tower casing - Corsair H50 liquid cooling kit - 6GB RAM (3x2GB triple channel 240-pin DIMM kit) - 1TB...
