Did you ever figure this out? The same thing recently started happening to me (OS 10.13.6) when I tried to install the 2020-002 security update via Software Update. I'm using 'sudo shutdown -h now' in the meantime, but it'd be nice to solve the problem properly. I'm not sure how to even begin...

That's clearly a different problem and I'm afraid I can't help there. Since this forum would likely be full of "No! Don't!" posts if there was a problem, I bit the bullet and installed it anyway (via the auto-updater). I'm now running driver 378.05.05.25f06 and there is no noticeable lag.

Do these drivers work OK? I see that people are having no end of trouble with lag when running the latest drivers on 10.13.3; are they OK on 10.12.6 or are the same problems happening?

It's been a while, but I finally had some time to look into this. I can confirm that this version of CodecCommander works with my Z170 (use KextBeast to install into /S/L/E). The solution came from this thread.
