Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Hopefully there will be better options in the near future. At present, this is the closest I found. It works out to $63 per SSD, which might make sense for those who have or need 3-4 SSD drives. Otherwise, it's a bit pricey and reviews are mixed (loud fan and complaints about build quality and...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Thank you for taking the time and effort to share your impressive setup, and screenshot of benchmarks. I appreciate it greatly. I've been looking for (and not finding) concrete examples of how RAID can improve speeds. Mostly what I've seen are either abstract equations or casual generic claims...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Ah, thank you for the clarifications. I mistook your initial comment ("Moving up, SMB itself is likely to become another bottleneck. It's single threaded, and not very good at scaling up.") to mean I should use AFP instead of SMB. After your comment that AFP was dropped by Apple, I switched...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Thank you for the suggestion and input. Turning off Wifi helped clarify a few things (including some unrelated weirdness*), as did dropping the AFP in favor of just SMB. I'm not get close to max 1G speeds now! Network speeds: Server HDD to MacStudio 10GBs in 1:33 (93s) = 107 MBs...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Thank you for the suggestion. I don't have any experience using switches. Would both computers plug into the switch's 10G ports, then the internet router into the 1G port... resulting in both computers having wired internet *and* being connected to one another over the wired 10G network? If so...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

The 1GB file was a single file (a .tiff photo edit). My 10 GB test was a folder filled with 1,800 files (half photos, half tiny "sidecar" text/data files). But I think this transferred at a faster rate than the 1GB image file.

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Hmmm. It's entirely possible I've made a rookie mistake* with the setup and/or how I connect. I'll experiment a bit more tomorrow. Perhaps the next step is to just try a 10G network router. I found a Hackintosh video which said the Aquantia chip in this card match the one in a 2019 Mac Pro...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

A few extra notes, in case anyone might find it helpful. I'm experiencing a variety of small issues (mainly slow network speeds) which are making the network less practical than hoped. The main appeal were the $0 cost and "convenience" of converting an existing Hackintosh (with a large, quiet...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Yes, that was another problem I had with Windows: aggressive updates with little or no warning. And people accuse Apple of taking away choices from users, lol. But there's a difference between making design and use decisions for you, or hiding information that most people don't need, vs...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

For anyone interested in closure :) tl;dr a fresh Open Core install of Catalina did the trick. x OMV. I installed OMV over the weekend. It was easy enough to install after watching a couple of videos. That's a big plus. I toyed around with it for a few days, but couldn't figure out how to set...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Oh wow. How do you measure energy efficiency? That's a concern of mine. My Hackintosh power supply is 850W. I would *hope* its power consumption would low if it were just being used as a network server but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The main upsides of my current rig is that it's paid for and the Fractal...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

That is a very quick setup time. Thank you for sharing that. That's encouraging. I've been looking at SSD and NVMe speeds so much of late that I had forgotten hard drives aren't much faster than the ~100 MB/s network speeds. After your comment on Friday, I ran speed tests on my Hackintosh's...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Quick (remedial) OpenMediaVault question that I'm not finding. (For anyone who isn't already out partying on a Friday night) :) What are the fastest types of connections with an OpenMediaVault setup? Can an old computer be set up like a JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) external drive enclosure...

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Thank you. Not seeing anything that should be causing this. Content and privacy restrictions, etc. are all turned off. App Limits off. Checked several profiles (Mine, the Admin, and the new one created today) none seem to have any restrictions on them either.

Hoping to repurpose Hackintosh as a server, but "File Sharing" greyed out

Curious. I don't seem to have parental controls. Or at least, I'm not seeing them. There also doesn't appear to be anything similar in any of the obvious areas, like Users and Groups, Security and Privacy, or even Family Sharing (I have two Apple IDs listed there). When creating a new user...
