In case anyone is interested, I finally switched to a displayport connector from DVI and I no longer have this issue I was running into (boots to a clear screen now). I guess there is an issue with the DVI port on some R9 280x cards.

I wish they would take this card off the buyer's guide recommend list, as it seems enough people are having problems that it doesn't seem to be 100% compatible with all configurations. I've had the same issues for a couple of months now with no solution, and I've tried everything.

I have the same problem as you describe, on a pretty different hardware system configuration. I was previously using a USB stick WiFi adaptor (some Realtek chipset) which worked fine on the same system. Wonder if there is some software config issue, as a lot of people seem to be having success...
