Bad news rebranding AR5B195. The replacement card shipped today.
My second attempt with the AR5B195 lead to the same error as I experienced with the first one, even though this time I rebranded it without any difficulty!

With perfect WiFi connections conditions I have 50-100 KB/s W-LAN speed. With an AR5B95 (NO BT) that error did not occur. Only with both BT-enabled cards.

My best guess is, that it is a driver issue, because when I boot into Ubuntu the card gets recognized as the rebranded one and a different driver is loaded. With this driver the card works out of the box and I can get full 6 MB/s over the air. That is why I do not think it is hardware (or EEPROM) related.

Is there anything I could do (even send you the card for further testing?)

EDIT!!!!!

I've just deleted the WLAN interface in the PrefPane. After re-adding it I have 6 MB/s??? rebooting now.

EDIT2: After rebooting I am still on fullspeed. Sorry for the confusion. Obviously removing and readding the device solves that issue. I'll test it again in one or two hours, just to make sure.

Rehabman:

Did you have any luck disabling the lock from the bios once removed from the board? Wouldn't the modded bios be a better long term fix for the whitelist?

I created a script that can patch the BIOS (a particular version). It removes both the CPU PM config lock (MSR 0xE2), and the WiFi whitelist. One person, 'kylec', successfully used it to create and flash a patched BIOS. Details are here: https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-REQUEST-Lenovo-Ideapad-U430-Touch-Bios-7CCN26WW

I never used my own patch, as flashing the modified BIOS requires removing the chip from the motherboard, which I felt is beyond my soldering skills. For me, modding the eeprom on the WiFi card is a better option, and avoids the risks associated with flashing the chip. I'll probably have this laptop for only another year, so it didn't seem worth the risk.

If there was a way to flash modded BIOS without removing the chip, the risk/reward calculus would be different.

Ive skimmed the topic, just didn't comprehend if it was 100% working or not.

As a long term fix, it wouldn't be bad to pull that chip, or even solder onto the board leads to connect it to a reader. I just personally don't have the hardware to rebrand a card at the moment. So I either have to buy a rebrand off someone, or just use a USB dongle.

Anyway, since your not going to have the laptop for long, does that mean development will be gone afterwards? Realistically, whatever laptop you are running will be the most sought after choice due to your abilities.

I have no ability to predict the future.

I will eventually want another laptop to tinker with (maybe a Lenovo Yoga 3 after OS X supports Broadwell). And when that happens I'll have to start getting rid of some laptops (currently have: 4530s, 4540s, u430, MacBookAir6,2).

Hi Guys!

Have got a Lenovo U530 Touch bought because I've heard that it's hackintosh compatible, maybe I should have to read the guide better before I bought it! My Head is smoking either it's because my English is so bad or else I have no experience of terminals, etc.! On my first Hackintosh HP Probook 4740s it was all so comparatively easy! OSX install, Post Installation Tool - Boom! it's ready unfortunately my HP defect now :( and I need a replacement as soon as possible! Here is my question: Can anyone give me a finished Clover Image with finished DSDT! This guide is so confusing to me I do not know what I need to do differently than what the U430 :( I have no idea about Github what I need to do differently than in U430! I miss the time when everything was working with a tool such as for the Probook's! I have the U530 Touch without Nvidia hopefully someone has the same model and has done patched files for me!

Thanks in advance

Read the guide carefully and follow it.

Funny thing about that... I'm pretty good at soldering things, and even then it's just barely possible to do it (without specialized tools). I removed the chip, programmed a new one and after soldering it in I successfully ran with a patched BIOS. BUT, I made a silly error in running the patches that Rehabman kindly provided, and so I did not actually succeed in removing the whitelist. However, I have no doubt that the patch is fine, and if you can handle the hardware aspects of the job then, yes, it would work.

On my second attempt at replacing the chip I damaged the motherboard, which cost me almost $200. At that point I gave up and moved on to other things. :)

Well that's understandable :)

Apart from the fact that I am pretty bad at soldering ... I've just had an idea. Probably a very bad one but I just wanted to ask the hardware pros around here:

====

Imagine you didn't own a second notebook and desperately wanted to rebrand a WiFi card. What would happen if you booted into Ubuntu, put the notebook into sleep and switched the card while the machine is sleeping? Second thought is: If you had your notebook running (say: in clover or so) and kind of "hot-plugged" a different card after the BIOS check. Do you think one could do that without breaking things?

OK.. But I knew someone had confirmed it worked. And it was 'sebold' at post #70: https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thr...d-U430-Touch-Bios-7CCN26WW?pid=77240#pid77240
