What about AMD's R9 Series (280x, 290x) on our Hackintoshes?. Further explanation.

Quick FYI for everyone. I recently performed a Yosemite install (z77x-ud5h, 3570k, Sapphire R9280X, Chimera) and the graphics performance with Mac Pro 3,1 was not accelerated. Using Heaven benchmark (9fps) and the old Cinebench (35 fps) confirmed this.

I changed the system definition to Pro 6,1 and now have accelerated graphics without deleting any kexts. Cinebench, 70+fps, Heaven on High with AA 4x and Tessellation normal (2560X1080), 39 fps. The Heaven figures roughly match Windows 8.

Unfortunately, the 3570k is now limited to 3.4GHz where under 3,1 I had full overclocking :rolleyes:

I changed my profile to 5,1 and it more than doubled the LuxMark score of my dual 280x's. Went from 2100 to 4500. Insane. Everything runs better too. It must have to do with how OS X deals with GPUs according to what model it thinks it is running on.

Just a theory, someone correct me if I am wrong.

I pretty much gave up on this concept.

The experience is so much better using an NVIDIA gpu since they're constantly updating the web drivers for us.

Really really enjoying my Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming
 
In hindsight, I'd have to agree. I was running Mavericks with an old 560ti and it worked well. Moved away from OS X for a few months (P8Z68/gen3 was a headache) and in the interim purchased the 280x for the 3gb to better support my chosen display.

Honestly, it's a shame since the 280x is a very good cost/performance option. I would have purchased a 770 if one was available with 3gb.

*SIGHS* looking at 4gb Nvidia now.

i got many information to get r9 280x

but can anybody tell me the right Brand for this card.

i have three options
1.ASUS R9 280 DIRECT CU II TOP
2.Sapphire VAPOR-X R9 280X
3.Sapphire TOXIC R9 280X


My Spec
17 4770k
Intel dz87klt-75k
Psu 600w Coller Master

Which version will work perfectly

But if you can't find that, then get the ASUS. You can really get any card as long as it has two mini displayports.

I'm running two ASUS R9 290X OC custom water cooled with Yosemite 10.10.1. I boot with Clover in UEFI Mode with Mac Pro 6,1 SMBIOS Settings. The BIOS of the 290X was flashed under Windows to support UEFI Boot. It's the standard ASUS Bios file.

The Cards are detected as AMD Radeon HD8xxx Series with 4GB of RAM. My Main Monitor on this machine is a ASUS PB287Q 4K 60Hz Monitor. It is connected via Displayport 1.2 to one of the cards. My second 24" Monitor is connected via HDMI to the other Card. When i connect both to one Card there both Monitor turn black. First Issue to solve later.

I want to use Retina (HIDPI) Mode on the 4K screen so i enabled it with the terminal command. After that i could select 1920x1080 scaled. Just pressed ALT when click on scaled.

After that i connected the 4K to my real Mac Pro 6,1 D700 and it showed me this:

From there i can get a 2560x1440 HiDPI scaled Retina Resolution. So i tried to get this on my Hackintosh with SwitchResX by adding a custom resolution of 5120x2880 but this didn't work. Still searching for that solution.

Gaming: I can play Diablo 3 RoS with 3820x2160x60Hz with VSync at 60FPS without drops. Deactivating VSync increase max FPS to about 105 with highest settings incl. AA (but not really needed with 157ppi display)

Hey everybody,

I've been reading through this thread for quite some time. Thanks for all the info by the way.

Finally I changed from GTX 660 Ti to R9 280X and everything seems to be working so far except for one thing:

Video Hardware Decoding!

As my system is 6 Core i7 that is not a problem for 1080p material but things are pretty sluggish with 2160p60 material.

So I would like to know if anybody of you guys got this working.

You can check pretty easily by using the following tool: https://github.com/cylonbrain/VDADecoderCheck/downloads

If you get a "Hardware acceleration is fully supported" from that tool, please post your SMBios settings and your Hardware Specs.

Just wanted to chime in with our experience with the XFX R9 290 and XFX R9 280x. Neither of them worked. It seems that Sapphire and Gigabyte are the manufactures to go with for the 290x and 280x.
