GTX 970 / GTX 980 are here

I posted this question in the Buying advice but haven't received an answer yet, so I figured I would ask in here.

Do these web drivers enable all ports on the GTX cards, or is it still kind of hit or miss? Reason I ask is my current GPU, an AMD 6870, in order to get my dual displays working I had to go with a DVI port and then a mini DP to DVI adapter for my other monitor.

The GTX 970 from the buyers guide is 2x DVI and 3x DisplayPort.

I want to get all my ducks in a row so there are no surprises once I pull the trigger on the build.

thanks!

All 3 DP ports of my card are working.
Everyone is according to say that DVI always work.

The only port which could have a problem is the hdmi because it's a 2.0 not yet recognize by OS X.

thank you for the reply. I don't use HDMI so that is a non issue for me.

Success at last. I now have the Asrock X99M Killer booting with Clover and the GTX980.
All 3 DP ports and the HDMI port work. With 4 displays connected, the 4k UP2414Q display works at only 1080P, same as the other displays.
Oddly enough, the HDMI port does not show up in System Profiler, only the 3 DP displays. Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 12.57.17 PM.jpg

With only the 4K display connected, I can get max res of 3008x1692@30Hz.
Text is sharp, but a bit too small for my eyes to comfortably read with the display 24"-30" away (my normal distance). 2560x1440@30Hz is a much more comfortable res for normal working conditions.

I've been following this thread almost since the beginning. I have an EVGA GTX 970 with an i7 4790, and I do a lot of work in AE and Premiere. So far, the card has been working great and I had no problems updating to the latest nVidia and CUDA drivers (except I did remove nvda_drv=1 from boot flags and boot with nv_disable=1 for first boot after installing upgrades, then added nvda_drv=1 back in). I even got CUDA-Z to at least run now that I have the latest version of that.. but alas, no functioning CUDA.

AE wont even let me try to use CUDA, even though I added it to the supported cards list. This is kinda weird because I'm pretty sure when I first did this build I was able to at least enable it (it would crash).

So I guess we're all waiting for nVidia or Adobe to fix this. It's good to know it's not a hardware issue.

On the bright side, my old machine, a 27" Late 2009 iMac, works in target display mode! I bought a DP to mini-DP cord, plugged it in and it just worked.. no hassle, it switches back and forth with no problems. I even run Spotify or iTunes in the BG on the iMac so as not to bog down my new machine.

It's really great. So great that I would advise those looking for a secondary monitor to consider this option. Find a used 27" Late 2009 iMac for cheaper than a thunderbolt display, and you basically get a cinema display plus a fully functioning computer to do your dirty work (emails, music, netflix, youtube).

Now, this will only work with the Late 2009 model (possibly older models as well), because this was right before everything switched to thunderbolt. I believe if it was a newer model, I'd have to install a thunderbolt PCIe card and go mini to mini, since you can't power a thunderbolt display with a DP signal. I've read a lot of horror stories about people thinking they can use their iMac in TD mode, but can't because of thunderbolt.

Anyways, looking forward to CUDA updates in the future!

Many people don't understand that OPENCL and CUDA are essentially the same thing. They allow the computer to use the GPU to do heavy graphics processing uses the GPU's mulitple cores which is many times faster (75-100%) than the CPU only. The difference is OpenCL is open spec and CUDA is proprietary to Nvidia Cards only. Because CUDA has been around longer it has slightly better performance than OpenCL for the time being especially with gaming.

When it comes to video editing and effects they both perform about the same - maybe a few percent faster with CUDA on the same Nvidia Card. . .

Adobe Premiere and Adobe After effects have the ability to use either OpenCL or CUDA with one exception.

Currently After Effects uses only CUDA for it's 3D ray tracing feature - Not something I've used in my video production work. . .
Of course it still works using the CPU it's just 10 times slower. . . After effects is able to use the GPU with OpenCL for everything else - so just because CUDA currently doesn't work with GTX980 doesn't mean we aren't using GPU in AE.

http://bit.ly/AE_CUDA_OpenGL_GPU

Adobe Premiere's Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration uses EITHER (OpenCL) or CUDA for video previews and rendering.
Go into File->Project Settings-> General -> Renderer and make sure it's set to Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) for the GTX 970/980.

When I was running Mavericks with a GTX 660Ti GPU I had TWO choices in Premiere under GPU Acceleration both OpenCL and CUDA.

I imagine if Nvidia gets CUDA working with Yosemite and the GTX 980 we'll again have that option. I however didn't notice that much of a difference using either setting. CUDA seemed to be a few seconds faster at rendering the same timeline. . .

As far as I can tell the only thing that doesn't work yet with Yosemite and a GTX 980 because of lack of CUDA support is After Effect's 3-D ray tracing feature.

Crazy thing is - it doesn't work with my Mac Pro (Late 2013) from work either because it has dual AMD D700 cards in it which don't support Nvidia's CUDA. However the AMD cards in it still do a great job with OpenCL rendering. . .

That's true. I've been editing with OpenCL in premiere on the 970 and it's great.

AE doesn't rely that much on GPU anyways. Raytracing with CUDA is the big exception.

This being my first hackintosh build, I just wanted to get everything working. I've never had the chance to really play around with ray-traced 3D in AE, so i'll just have to wait.

Anyways, C4D will always be there for me.

GTX 970 I need HDMI video, Yosemite 10.10.1!!!!!!!!!!! Hakingtosh not wrk. on HDMI with WEB Nvidia DRV. !!!
Help me !!!!!!!!!!!!

DP -> HDMI cable ?

For the novices out there who are trying to install these cards in an older Mac Pro, can anyone kindly suggest a simple step by step process? I've read this thread thoroughly and bounced from one link to another. After 3 days of no luck i will either have to return the cards i purchased or try and get a local shop to do the install, although some won't even touch the install, citing a software, not a hardware issue. I've installed all the latest drivers but am obviously missing some crucial step. Upon boot up i just get a black screen. I've installed a couple of ATI cards before and they worked immediately, didn't realize the process with the EVGA GeForce cards would be so complicated.

Here is my set up...

2010 Mac Pro
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 SC
AX860 power supply
Running Yosemite Version 10.10.1
Installed the latest Nvidia driver (343.01.02f01)
Cuba Driver 6.5.33

Tonymac's suggestions listed here seam simple enough, the first step anyways, but once there is mention of navigating to chameleon and adding strings of text, i'm at a loss as to how to do this.

Tonymacs instructions

I've also looked at spballer's #138 post and his build, guess i'm missing some steps because i can't get Tonymac's UniBeast/MultiBeast working and i'm assuming this is what i'm missing to have my cards be recognized?

Thanks for any of your help and or suggestions.
