I fall in the camp of using the same IDs for my hackintosh as my mac. It seems my mac iMessage stopped working on 12/31 later towards the evening.

I'm assuming reinstalling the OS will have no effect. Should I just bring it into the genius bar, let them fiddle around with it and possibly end up giving me a new laptop?

@oOoo,

I doubt very much that a reinstall will fix anything .... there is all sorts of weird crap going on at the moment, some messages being delivered others not .... I think this latest knee jerk change by Apple has introduced all sorts of issues into the iMessage service and its effecting real Mac's and Hacks in an unpredictable way.

I would just sit tight for the moment and don't do anything, if you have a mobile Apple device then use that for iMessage the next few days ..... its quite possible that Apple may have to back-out this recent server change/update if it continues to cause issues for real Mac's ..... I suspect that the support lines are red hot at the moment.

Cheers
Jay

This also happens on the virtual Yosemite I run in a VMFusion 7.1 virtual machine on my MacBook.
Seeing as Fusion also uses the same MLB and ROM (but not serial) as my MacBook, it might be interesting to wait and see how Fusion fixes this.

(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own or control that is already running the Apple Software.

This is going to be interesting to see how apple flags use based on following their own EULA

Thanks Jay. I'll sit tight and keep an eye on this thread.

This is a symptom of the latest (late December) issue ... please see top news article in the guide .....

Quote ...

Symptoms of this latest issue seem to be no messages being sent or received from OSX devices despite being able to log in and out of iMessage without issues, mobile devices such as iPhone and iPad are unaffected.

Cheers
Jay

Thanks Jay,

I have an update: some minutes after my previous post, iMessage and FaceTime logged me out. And I got the usual support code... I called Apple and they re-activated me instantly. This time worked flawlessly. But I lost the Continuity support ... and I still cannot receive messages but just send them ..

Are you sure it's being sent (have you confirmed with the recipient)? Mine shows it as delivered (on my Mac + iPhone), however, when I messaged my friend about it, the message was never received. He provided screenshots to show that the message never came through.

It's not being sent or recieved for me from real mac. Logged out and back into iCloud/iMessages couple times now. I've completely logged my hack out of iCloud to wait it out after reverting ROM/MLB back (now getting an apple support code).

Now it's working again ... it's required a bit of time and I had to log out and in from Messages on iPhone and iPad. Now everything is back to normal. I don't know how long it will last ...

I have been following this thread with interest. Ages ago I fixed the iMessages problem during Yosemite beta and then it stopped working again at some point after upgrading to the released Yosemite. I decided to wait a little while and see what developed. I prefer not to be banned, and we (wife and I) have a number of Apple products that we prefer to use more than I enjoy my hackintosh.

That said, here are my thoughts - these are idle musing and based on nothing but what I have read here:

There are several possibilities -

1. Apple is aware of hacks and doesn't care, instead it is simply aggressively working on tightening security and our issues are a simple side effect, and we put too much importance on our presence. I seriously doubt Apple is afraid hackers are using Hackintoshes to bypass their security - why bother, when a simple older Mac can be had used for a few hundred dollars...

2. Apple lawyers have instructed management that Apple must take active steps to protect it's copyrighted material. If a company KNOWS that someone is violating it's copyrighted material and does not take steps to correct this, courts have found/rule that the company has lost the right to seek remedies in the future. So, it may well be that Apple has a team of one aggressive person on staff whose job it is to actively/full time harass hackers.

3. I am sure Apple does not want to annoy "real" users. If they want to stop hacks and not annoy real users the approach I would take would be to identify hacks, identify hack techniques (google is their friend) and monitor forums like this one. I would then collect a database on all the details about the hacks that I can get and analyze that data offline looking for the best way to stop hacks while allowing real users to pass through the door. So, the more "attempts" individuals make to circumvent Apples security the more information Apple gets on how people might circumvent their security - consider that when you "try" something known to not work, you are in essence "working for Apple" and supplying them with more information...

I don't know if any of this is the case, but I think it humorous that most people here seem to think of Apple as this "sleeping giant" that they can just carefully tip toe past. I expect Apple is well aware of the Hacks and the real issue is do they care, and I don't expect them to let us know one way or the other any time soon. For my part, I prefer to let the ones here that have the time and experience to try to figure out what is actually happening to work on it, and to not risk my own Apple IDs or devices being banned.

And one last word and I will go back to lurking... those of you who are just "trying things" that might work - you are being incredibly selfish and while it might not matter to you if you sink the good ship hackintosh, I think I speak for most of us when I say I wish you would just stop and let Jay and others find a real solution before you end it for all of us. You know that if Apple wanted to they could push weekly changes, based on the info they are gathering, that would not only stop iMessages, but prevent Mackintoshes from running at all on foreign hardware...

Welcome to the Forum, jfnichols!

I think you've come up with 3 well thought out reasons for what's going on although we probably would be shut down by now if number two had happened or going to happen.

I also definitely agree with your conclusion - time for all of us to sit back, keep our iPhones handy and let JayMonkey and the other knowledgeable folks do the proper due diligence. Remember, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Looks like I can login, I can send message to myself (but other iDevices can't read it), it claims delivered anything I sent, but the receiver got nothing.

Continuity with iPhone sometimes failed, I can't receive call from the Hackintosh. However, interestingly, I can't even receive call from my iPad Air.
