I'm using the HD 4600 graphics on a Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP with an I5-4440. Machine will work perfectly for days, sometimes less, then fails into a staticy old-time analog TV-looking screen ("snow"). System is Mavericks 10.9.1 and displays via DVI. Problem is always resolved by a restart… at least so far. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this is or how to fix it? Thanks!!

This does appear to happen sometimes. The cure is to add a GPU.

When it happens on my GA-H87-HD3 and i5-4440 build I normally just power the monitor off/on two or three times and the picture returns to normal once the screen and Intel graphics have re-synced with each other. I use DVI-D connection but it could also happen with HDMI.

Thanks for the suggestion! It took weeks to happen again, but it just did... and unfortunately the monitor toggling didn't help. I'm hoping to not have to lay out $50 for a GPU; are there any other options?
