Hey all,

This is my first attempt at a hackintosh - I have a very mint G5 case with all internal parts except a hard drive and a fried processor. I've read through all the G5 mod threads here. Really amazing and helpful stuff!

I'm not as knowledgeable on the individual electronic component options as I'd like to be, but I'm learning. For simplicity's sake, I'm thinking of going with the second power budget build on Tonymac's blog.

At this time, I don't intend on cutting out the back panel, as I don't use many of the needed ports and would like to retain the original design for now. Given that, do you think the gigabyte board is a good bet to at least line up the pci slots? And if I do go with that board, any ideas on what sufficient cooling would be?

This noob appreciates any and all advice! Thanks!

I have 2 mint cases because my G5 broke down in 2009 and 2010 respectively (fried processor).
In the beginning I thought to reuse their case to build a hackintosh but I realized that one must be not only very technically skilled and have a very good level of manual ability but also have the right tools and a decent space to make the work done.

As you probably know there's no way, when you use Gigabyte motherboards within G5 cases you must cut the back panel.
That's why I choose a Cooler Master case. ;)

I saw there also other people who reused a G4 case, but they were forced to make a hole on its top to install an extra cooler...

Go with an ITX or MATX board, there is no need to do any cutting abd you can even mount your Power Supply into the stock apple PS

You can mount a full size ATX without cutting, you will need a board with a PCIX slot in one of the first 4 from the edge (My UD3P PCIX is the 2nd slot)

Not sure why wavesquare says you need to cut? no imagination!

lol I have been scowering ebay looking at G5 cases. Seems like a cool idea to me to mac a hackintosh in a Mac Pro cas.e.
Some people still wand an arm and a leg for them though

Thanks everyone! After reading more I'll probably go MATX. I like the idea of keeping the ps where it belongs. Let me know if anyone has suggestions on those.

I know this project will be a huge undertaking, but I have the time and resources, so why not! :D

Check out hackintosh.com , on there forum was a guy who kept the pack panel and used the G5 mother board plug plate by cutting it of the bad mobo. He then removed the USB and video ones and put a double female of each in it's place. He did same with video card as well. What he did was place the new mobo back away from rear sonhe could just plug into his double female parts with extended cords from the new mobo. It looked good and if you take your time it all looks doable. He had step by step instructions and lots of pics. I just googled MacPro case mods and got to his link. I would copy and past but I'm on my phone now and that is all on my Mac, sorry and good luck!
Remember to post some pics as well while your setting it up!

Edit: could of been insanelymac.com sorry I have been to so many sites and pictures about building a hackintosh my mind is going to melt lol

Thanks eelhead! I did see a few people who did that, so I might go that route. I know one of the issues there was the space between the new board and the outputs, as in, can you fit a small cable in there. Once I've got mine in I'll see if it's doable. With a MATX, hopefully!

Your welcome! If I find any other stuff I will post for all of our benefits lol

Yeah there was enough room for a small cable for all the hook ups. It looked nice and neat after he was done with it.

Well I pulled the trigger and bought a complete G5. Snagged it off ebay with they buy now option :D
Now I will have to finish getting my parts ordered so I can start my Frankintosh/Macinstien
build :headbang:

oh and here is the link for the mod

There is also a couple of useful links in the thread of buying a mobo plate and rear plate and giving the back of the G5 case a nice clean look!

edit:
more here as well. So much resource this is awesome!
