I've had my hackintosh up and running for over a year now. For the past 6 months or so, it has been running ML 10.8 with no problems.

Recently however, upon shutting down, the computer seems to go into a sleep mode. Upon returning to the computer and pressing the power button, the machine begins firing up, but in never see anything on screen. If I press the reset button, the computer apparently reboots, however the screens come up black again. If I press the power button, I hear the default Mac "ding" sound, which tells me that the computer is sleeping rather than shutting down or restarting.

Question is: how do I actually reboot the machine so that it will startup again? Rather than having it start up to a black screen?

Try pressing and holding the power button in for a few seconds to do a complete power down (which is what you want) rather than sleep or hibernate.

Right, I've tried that repeatedly. The computer shuts down, but when I turn it back on... nothing. Black screen. Fans are running, everything sounds like its on, but the screens never even display the BIOS screen.

I am out of ideas.....

From the sound of it I'd say you need to reset your BIOS. Afterwards you should be able to boot and then tackle the original problem.

Good luck

I've experienced this a few times and it has always been related to a drive that was acting up. Disconnect as many drives as possible leaving only the one you need to boot from connected. If you still can't get to the bios, take the last step and disconnect that drive too. If you then get to the bios screen, it would suggest there's something going on with your boot drive.
