Need a little help with a Dell M6600...

Hi, any chance I this method can be used on dell m6600 with amd m8900 graphics ?
Have tried several times over the last year to get mavericks installed but always results in black screen on laptop .
My specs -
dell m6600
i7 2920xm
8gb ram 1600 MHz
amd m8900 2gb graphics ( no optimus / no switchable graphics in bios )
17.3 '' screen 1600x900 resolution

I'm quite willing to use intel hd only for osx if that's an option ,
as I'll dual boot for amd graphics in windows.

Any help much appreciated , can upload radeon bios output or anything else if required?

Thanks ,Úll Mac

Úll Mac, nobody seems to know how to help when it comes to the FirePro line of cards. I've posted a couple of times on this forum, and on another forum, and all I get is dead air. I have a Dell M6400 with a 1GB FirePro M7740 (with no Intel HD option). The best I've been able to get is native resolution (1920x1200 in my case) with NO graphics acceleration. Fortunately this is sufficient to run Xcode and the iOS simulator, so I'll deal with it. What I had to do to get as far as I did was to set GraphicsEnabler to No in /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist and set "Graphics Mode" to "1920x1200x32" in the same file. In your case, you would set "Graphics Mode" to "1600x900x32", though I'm not sure if such a resolution is a valid VESA mode (i.e., it may not work.)

Good luck...

IMRAZOR....

Appreciate the reply , have to agree with you too
Firepro support here is almost nil.
I'm of the opinion that I need a custom dsdt to have any chance of success.
I've tried custom personalities, various boot flags including your suggestion but not really got anywhere.
The shame is I would be more than happy with intel hd 3000 in osx , but not so easy with no option in bios to disable ati.

On a side note , I have managed to get ati firepro v5800 card 100% working in mavericks with my desktop setup.
Full support , system profiler , dvd player etc all 100%
And no issues whatsoever , running nice and quiet with good temps.

Will update if I get anywhere with the m8900.

The only other recommendation I can make is to check and see if your GPU is removable. IIRC, the M6600 has an MXM slot which would allow you to physically remove your GPU and potentially just use the Intel HD graphics. Don't take my word for it; do some research and make sure this is possible. You could also conceivably replace it with an NVidia Quadro, which seems to be easier to get working.

EDIT: One other thought. Something that *might* help is to move all of the AMD/ATI kexts out of /System/Library/Extensions and move them to a safe backup location. Make sure you rebuild the kext cache after you do this. This will prevent OS X from trying to initialize the AMD GPU and *may* allow the VESA driver to load instead. If it does work, you'll be in the same boat I am - no graphics acceleration.
