CAD/3D/Motion Graphics Workstation Build - i7 4930K, Quadro K4000

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum (and Hackintosh community in general) and just wanted to lay out the build I'll be putting together this weekend. I didn't originally plan on a Hackintosh build, but after some detective work, I believe I've purchased the right Goldilocks combination of parts to successfully make a high-end 3D workstation AND stick to the OS I've come to know and love over the years.

The total cost of the build came to roughly $2,300, and I was able to get a couple of super nice ASUS PA248Q calibrated monitors for under $300 apiece. I went with Nvidia Quadro K4000 graphics - I've worked with Quadros before and I absolutely love their viewport performance, especially in AutoCAD. There is no way I could warrant hacking a GTX to make it work like a Quadro - I need that warranty.

The Specs are:

GPU: NVIDIA Quadro K4000 3GB GDDR5 (PNY Part #: VCQK4000-PB)

MB: ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

MEM: 4X Crucial Ballistix Elite 8GB (32GB) DDR3 1866 MT/s (PC3-14900) CL9 @1.5V UDIMM

PSU: CORSAIR HX850 850W

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III MZ-7TE250BW

HDD: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"


If anyone out there has a similar build please chime in! I'd especially like to know if anyone has had any issues/luck with getting the Quadro K4000 to play nice in Mavericks.

Looks like a good workstation to me. I prefer the Samsung 840 Pro to the EVO, but the EVO will work OK. The Quadro will work OK, just download the Mac drivers from nVidia and install them.

That's what I'm afraid of, nVidia's site doesn't have Mac versions of the drivers for the K4000 available yet. Searching other forums, I've come across only a small number of people that have gotten this card to work, but then again, I don't know if they mean it "works" as in it produces an image or it "works" meaning it has all the performance drivers in order and is functioning at full operational capacity. I already broke the bank on this system and don't foresee purchasing the pricey-yet-supported K5000... that's an extra $1,000 I don't have lying around.

In the long run, it would be a bummer if I had to make this a Windows box just because of the card, but it is partly the core reason for the build.

Check the K5000 driver - sometimes the drivers also include lower ranked cards

How did this work out jbarone312, did you find a driver that works for the Quadro K4000?

Nvidia doesn't have Mac drivers for the Quadro K4000 because there is no Mac version of the K4000, only PC, unlike the Quadro 4000, which had both Mac and PC versions. Like Going Bald said, the K5000 driver might work with the K4000 but I think it's likely the K4000's id code will have to be added to the kext.

are you able to get 4K output from display port of Nvidia k4000? I am only getting 1080 resolution.

For anyone looking for a less powerful alternative, there is the NVS 510. It is manufactured by PNY. Dell and HP have re-branded it and sold it with their workstation PCs. It works natively, even in Mojave. No drivers to install. Has 4 mini DP 1.2 ports that do 4K @ 60Hz. You will need mini-DP to DP adapters if your monitor has full size DP inputs.

It's certainly not nearly as powerful as a K4000 but it's an easy way to power multiple 4K monitors and not break the bank doing that. https://technical.city/en/video/Quadro-K4000-vs-NVS-510
Even if you go with a K4000 or K5000 it might be worth buying one of these as a backup to have around. At this price it hardly costs more than a lowly GT710.
