Booting in safe mode?

Hi, I have installed garageband, latest version. it reports that it cannot download due to internet connection issues, of which there are none on my end. This is apparently happening to lots of folks both hackintosh and apple branded users. Several apple forum threads claim that booting into safe mode will allow installation to complete. However, I cannot boot into safe mode via the shift key method. My screen hangs on a blacked screen no matter how long i hold shift key and then just boots normally when released.

My question is "how do I boot into safe mode, other than the shift key method?"

At your chimera boot screen hit the space bar to stop the loading aNd type -x and hit enter

I had this recently too.

The app itself downloaded but it failed when downloading the extra jingles/sounds/instruments.

The first 2 times i had left it and came back some time later.

On the third attempt, after rebooting, it worked ok after bashing in the password very quickly when prompted; dont allow it to idle too long otherwise it seems to forget what it has downloaded and produces the error you are seeing.
