So all I have to do is shrink my current windows volume (lets call it M), put in my clover usb, open disk utility from the mac install, partition M as mac os extended (journaled) and then install it right on that partition right, and Im done right?

Also, clover wont like erase my current boot manager or anything; ill only be able to run clover when the usb is in, right?

My drive is already GPT

Sounds about right but clover will overwrite the windows bootmgr if you installer the clover bootloader but that's ok cause clover can boot windows

But as long as I don't install the clover bootloader onto the hard drive (just use the usb when i want to run osx [just for final cut pro]), then the windows boot manager will stay?

Doesn't matter - OS X does not like Windows partition management. I can get Win7/8/8.1 to install legacy mode on an OS X formatted drive, but haven't been able to install OS X on a Win7/8/8.1 formatted GUID and installed UEFI yet. The Disk utility in the installer will not even see the disk - it is not in the available list to partition/format at all. Nor have I been able to install Windows in UEFI mode on a drive partitioned and formatted GUID with the OS X disk utility. It doesn't see any of the partitions as valid to install on.

Still experimenting.

Even if Win8 was installed legacy mode, OS X still will not install because Win8 installer formatted the drive MBR partition tables.

I haven't tried a fresh install of Windows UEFI then OS X (eg. partitioning done by Windows), but I have successfully installed 10.9.x on a disk provided by a Windows OEM (Lenovo) without issue.

I simply shrank the Windows partition in diskmgmt.msc, created a FAT32 placeholder (or was it exFAT?), then formatted that placeholder partition in OS X Disk Utility. At the time, I had to install Clover manually, since the EFI partition was at /dev/disk0s2 instead of /dev/disk0s1 (this problem has been corrected in the Clover installer now).

Well, I can confirm that it works.

I shrunk my windows partition by 50gb and just formatted it as NTFS, with the Windows disk mananger. I plugged in my clover usb drive and booted the OS X install. Then I went to Disk Utility, found my partition, clicked it, chose erase as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and voila! The installer recognized it as a normal disk.

I had to install some elan kext to get the keyboard to work, but still no luck with the touchpad. Ill fix that tomorrow.

Maybe that's where I always go wrong - trying to format when I need to erase!
Will try that this weekend when I get back.

Tried this on a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate installed UEFI. Doesn't work.
Open disk management tool and shrink partition DSC_0086.JPG leaving the space unallocated. It doesn't show up in disk utility this way, and can't create a partition and format it.
Next tried making the Unallocated partition into a Simple Volume without formatDSC_0143.JPG and while it shows up in disk utility, I am unable to either format or erase - the partition is greyed out DSC_0146.JPG and selecting it and attempting an erase results in DSC_0149.JPG . So tried formatting the partition - NTFS is the only option and since this is a 4k drive selected 4096 allocation unit size DSC_0152.JPG resulting in DSC_0153.JPG , which now shows up in disk utility DSC_0155.jpg .

But attempt to erase DSC_0157.JPG gets DSC_0158.JPG again.

Tried it again with the default alocation size and got the same thing. Any suggestions?

I have no 4k drives here (4k relevant?), but I'll try some things this afternoon and report back.

Also, I'll be using Win8.1... not sure if something has changed there. We'll see...

4k doesn't seem to be relevant - tried with an older drive using the Windows tool to format and chose default. Results are the same.

I think I found the problem, though. While in disk utility I tried selecting the drive and using the repair tool. In the detail page it said the EFI partition was too small and it could not be changed. OK, so went and formatted the drive with OS X disk utility, 1 partition and looked at the drive with diskutil list. EFI partition for OS X is 209.7Mb. Windows is 100Mb DSC_0051.jpg . So, experimenting a bit, I formatted the drive 1 partition. Rebooted with the Win7 install media and this time did not delete the EFI partition created by OS X disk utility. Chose to let Win7 create its partitions default single partition for the drive and Win7 was happy with it and installed with no problem.
Used Win7 disk management tool to shrink the single partition, created a Simple Volume and formatted it NTFS, default and rebooted to UniBeast. OS X installed without a single problem after erasing the partition using OS X Extended (Journaled) format.

Conclusion? Is it just the EFI partition size OS X doesn't like with older versions of Windows installed UEFI?
