Does anyone have DD/DTS/AC3 Passthrough working with VLC?

My setup is ALC888 via optical to my amp. I have sound working fine and Output is set to 'Digital Out'.

In VLC I have set ' User S/PIDF when available and force detection of Dolby Surround.

In Audio Midi I have Format: 48000.0Hz 2ch-24bit Integer

MPlayerX works, but I would prefer VLC.....

My experience, DD/DTS only works in OS X/VLC when the option Digital Output (Encoded) appears in the VLC/Audio menu. To get that option in Audio MIDI Setup, select Format/Encoded Digital Audio. If you don't have that option, the AppleHDA binary in your 888 AppleHDA.kext can be edited to provide that capability.

As an aside, your current settings will enable DD/DTS in Plex and XBMC (without the Encoded Digital Audio option). Perhaps this will be solved in VLC 2.0, available soon.

I tried the VLC 2.0 rc1 today - which didn't work, so decided to ask.

What do I need to edit in my AppleHDA.kext?

Thanks

Try this. Follow the instruction for replacing the current AppleHDA binary with the Encoded Digital Audio AppleHDA binary. Install the modified kext.

Any chance this works snow leopard as well?

I have an amp that decodes and VLC says optical, but not optical encoded. It sounds like 5.1, probably faux, but there is no multichannel available in midi setup.

EDIT: I was desperate and tried it anyway, obviously doesn't work. My optical works well in Win7 and I do seem to get 5.1, but I may be fooling myself as OSX doesn't recognize all the speakers since my receiver is doing the transcoding.

Worked perfectly! VLC is now playing in surround sound!
Also fixed my issue with MPlayerX where the volume had to be at 50% or I got loud clicking!

Are there any downsides to using this kext?

Hi toleda,

Is there a chance there's a similarly modified kext for an ALC 892 setup? I'm trying to solve the same issue with 5.1 playback via SPDIF in VLC.

Thanks!

Stopped working with Mountain Lion. No known fix for VLC. Plex and XBMC support DTS and DD 5.1 over SPDIF in Mavericks.

Is there a known fix by now for VLC to enable DTS over SPDIF in ElCapitan? Only Stereo on ALC 892 so far.
