Hi all,

I would like to use the original Cube PSU in a future mod.I've been doing some online research and found the following:

PSU pin-out

Thanks to TomD for the PSU specs:
The outer shell is ground - thru to the 3rd pin of the AC power cord

The two pins that are closer together are +28V, Cube flat inner part and the other two pins are the 28V return. (not Ground) Cube, shell notch. The sides also have notches on the Cube receptacle. The 2 28V lines are common circuits as are the 28V returns.

| ** | <___ 28V
-----/ <--- GND shield

They refer to return line and to ground. Can somebody be so kind to explain the difference between them?

cheers

I assume this means +-28V. Why there needs to be two conductors for each I'm not certain. It could be to increas current carrying capacity or the assumption that they're both 28V is wrong. I'm almost certain at least one of these will be a sense line.

If you have a working cube, power it up and check under Power in system profiler to see if it reports a serial number. If it does, you know one or more of those pins carries data.

Hi iCubeFan, I cannot help you with the pinout, but am wondering why you want to incorporate this old PSU into a build? Just curious is all...

Cheers!

I'm planning a new Cube build.I want this build to look 99,9 % stock and this includes the use of the original psu if possible.
btw I've been following all your recent builds.Congratulations!

I wanted to use this DC- DC converter
http://www.tonymacx86.com/hardware-...tx-atx-power-dc-dc-converter-pico-psu-y2.html
It has the same power jack that the original Cube uses.

These are the specs. ( enough to power a Haswell NUC)

What confuses me is the power jack pinout.

This is from a very similar board that only accepts 24V
http://www.electrodacus.com/photo/ATX/DD-24AX-1.pdf

Pin 1 DC 24V Input
Pin 2 GND
Pin 3 DC 24V Input
Pin 4 GND

while the Cube psu pinout states ( first post in this thread)

The other two pins are the 28V return. (not Ground)

Any ideas?

Cheers

As I understand it: if you think of the supply like a battery with + and - terminals the 28v lines are the "+" and the returns are the "-". The Ground referred to would be, for instance, attached to and at the same electrical potential as the "GND" line on the AC supply.

At the Cube you will simply need to think of the "+" and the "-" and you can connect the Ground to the Cube case. Often of course we also connect the "-" to the Ground too………which ties the "-" side of the supply to earth potential.

I think the above is correct. If I am wrong or if others want to add more detail I am sure they will!

As for the above (I see you edited the post!) this is for an INTERNAL board so they are only concerned with the DC world, here GND is very often used entirely interchangeably with RETURN or with "-". So……
GND in this case can be thought of simply as the black wire within an onboard circuit and actually corresponds to the "RETURN" spoken of earlier.

In fact, if you tie connect the incoming GND wire from the Cube power supply to the Cube Chassis and also make a similar connection with a black wire then you are tieing all the returns to GND which is generally thought to be a good thing and also makes the Cube touch switch work properly.

Again, others may step in if I am speaking out of order….

Bingo! I was mixing AC terminology with DC terminology.
Thanks once more

I contacted the DC board seller and he provided me with the power socket pinout.

but unfortunately the pinout doesn't match the Cube PSU connector :problem:

Holding the plug the way you show it (Key at bottom):
A & B are +28V and are connected together.
C & D are Common (or - side of supply)
Outer shell is safety ground, connected to the ground pin on the AC line plug.

So I need to continue looking for solutions.

One option would be to disassemble the Cube PSU, and reconnect the wires from the cable, i.e. reverse them, thus the pinout would be comparable.

Too much for me.

I found this:

AC-DC-12V-12-5A-b1.jpg

It should be fairly easy to reverse the pins from the white plug and use the board's white power socket.

Where did you find that plug? Adapter I'm working on a cube mod of my own and was thinking of using it myself!
