Have a close loo at Post 87 of MacTester's build. The solution is the front panel power indicator (LED), that comes from a header on the motherboard. Intel motherboards (assume others as well) allow you to display sleep mode in a different LED state e.g blinking. On the NUC you can set this a dual colour mode which reversers the polarity of the signal for dual colour LED's, this can easily be detected and used to drive micro controller or other inverter cutout circuit.

Kiwi

Kiwi, thank you for details. Unfortunately I couldn't find the dual color LED feature on Giga motherboard, but GA-H77TN should comply intel's thin mini-itx standard, I will test to verify this.

Awesome!
How did you figure out all of the audio circuitry on the original mobo?

Mykuls, the circuit on original motherboard is just the same as on the datasheet of the chip. Attached for your reference

Does the H87tn now use the same efi bios as the other gigabyte mobos? I remember reading the ivys and sandys thin mobos used some laptop variation or something.

I haven't try H87TN, but it should be as similar as H77TN. Yes, the efi bios is not full version of other gigabyte boards

Wingworm, you are a freakin genius!!! Wow. I have never seen a mod this flush and sleek. Congratulations and respect. (Though I would not like to trade against my completely dead silent little Powermac.. :) Still,I would like to be able to do things like that)

Thanks! I'm getting better at understanding this stuff. Perhaps I can really figure this out some day.

Did you have to sever any traces on the motherboard for any of the connections, usb audio! etc?

9.wifi and Bluetooth.

A mini pci-e module supporting wifi and Bluetooth is used, and the original antenna is reused.

10. fan

Original fan is resued.

Which mini pci-e module did you use and where did you get it?

If you have tried the h87tn, are there any issues with the bios? Should I be scared off thin-itx and use its instead?

Mykuls, sorry for late reply, I only have time to try the complete solution by h87tn recently. The answer is yes, h87tn works quite well for hackintosh as other giga mobos.

For mini pci-e module, I finally chose BCM94352 with 802.11ac and bt 4.0, and can be easily driven in Yosemite

Now this is awesome! How did you convert it automatically to hdmi???

This is a very clean mod and reusing the original cooling system is great. Thanks for sharing. Was wondering if you could tell us how hot it is running.
Also, if you were to build this in 2016, would you go for Skylake or another motherboard?

Hi Wingworm - I am using the same Mobo as you in a 20" G4 iMac and I am having heaps of trouble getting the display backlight to sleep. I know this isn't an issue with my wiring because I have the display turning off automatically when I plug the display into another Mobo and set it to sleep. I should add that when I test my Mobo's HDMI pin#18 I am getting a constant 5v no matter what...Do you think I might have a broken Mobo?
