Anybody know if the 570 would need this fix?

I'm supposed to do for a friend (would be my first build which focuses on FCPX) and would like to keep it simple as possible..

I might just stick with integrated graphics..

At this point I've been sticking with Ivy Bridge, but maybe it's time to go to Haswell - since the integrated GPU is better?

I don't know about the 570, but if you wanna go simple and safe I'll suggest you to buy the gtx 650 Ti
it worked beautifully in FCP X 10.1, but don't forget to apply the patch if not if would get stuck at maximum
clocks. If you decide to go for a 650 Ti please avoid the EVGA version, is really loud!!! go for the MSI version with the Twind Frozr ( best gpu cooler ever!!!).

Ok thanks for the heads up!

I do have an extra EVGA 650ti Boost SC... Should that work without issue, aside from being loud?

I assume I would need to apply the patch as well.

Edit: looks like I have the same GPU as you did at the point of on of your earlier posts... good to know!

@davidianis

One last question: would I need to apply the patch if I plan on keeping the system at Mountain Lion?

It seems that the patch was designed for Mavericks... and I am wondering if the maximum clocks issue happens in 10.8.5.. thanks in advance!

The gtx 650 Ti worked flawlessly, despite de noise levels I was really happy with it!
I changed to the MSI 760 gtx Twin Frozr due to the amazing cooling system
I love quietness!!!

I think the patch doesn't work on ML, but i'm not 100% certain. Some people had
already problems in previous Mac OS versions, sometimes I actually think about
"unpatching" my system to get proper OpenCL support, sure the computer will use more
power but years ago all graphic cards worked at maximum clocks and I was still able to
pay the bills :p.

Hmmm thanks for your reply... very informative!

After digesting all of this info, I guess my main question is: if I'm using the HD4000, would there be less of an incentive to stray from Mountain Lion, as it is the dedicated graphics cards which tend to get stuck at high frequencies and not those which are integrated into the processor?

The reason why I'm asking is because when it comes to running the latest software, I tend to prefer working at a safe distance from the bleeding edge o_O .. but I've heard that Mavericks is supposed to offer better optimizations for Final Cut Pro-X...

I wonder if I should go ahead and clone the freshly-created OS drive, update it to Mavericks - and then install Final Cut on both drives to see if stability-wise, there is a clear-cut winner...

At this point the new build is using the integrated GPU (HD4000), so maybe for now I can keep the system at 10.8.4 - then by the time my guy's ready to go with the 605ti, I might luck out and a future version of Mavericks will have been released which doesn't require patching?

Wishful thinking, I know ..

Once again, I really appreciate your replies and I hope you don't find any of my questions to be redundant.

I added a 2nd identical MSI 650ti and it made a significant improvement in FCPX. I used this 'benchmark':

http://www.fcp.co/forum/hardware/18250-brucex-try-this-new-final-cut-pro-x-benchmark

My result went from 76 seconds to 48 seconds by just simply dropping the card in - no configuration necessary. Pretty good boost for ~$100. Others are getting better results with more VRAM though - the 650ti only has 1GB. AMD Radeons also seem to be outperforming Nvidia so I'm going to eventually switch over to a pair of R270X's.

Thanks for sharing, actually I think is a very good Idea to use this benchmark to show
how FCPX performs, maybe we could create a post with our results and give other people
pretty valuable info to help them choose the appropriate card for this task.
