How To Triple Boot Mountain Lion, Windows 8, Linux Ubuntu on a SEPARATE DISK

I formatted a 50 GB ext4 partition on my HDD (/dev/sdb1) and mounted it to the root (/) for the Ubuntu 13.10 installation, and I specified to install GRUB there as well. However, I do not see the Penguin icon for Linux in Chimera. I made sure to install what seemed like a Legacy installation of Ubuntu off my USB.

Do you have any other suggestions for getting the Linux icon to appear in Chimera? Again, I appreciate the help. I also created a swap area on my HDD as well (/dev/sdb2). Previously, I managed to get a Windows FAT32 partition to appear in Chimera that would load GRUB, but the icon for this partition was not the familiar and coveted Penguin logo.

The icon used seems like a secondary (theme related) issue.

The question is whether the partition shows and can you boot from it. It is very easy to not install Grub to the right place, so you must be careful. Refer to my blog (link in signature) for a step-by-step install of Ubuntu (There is a step marked IMPORTANT!).

In my experience Chimera only recognizes the ext3 file system not the ext4 stuff. Look in /Extra directory of OS X, you will see a directory of Themes/Default, notice the icons are for ext3 only.

It recognizes both. I have an Ubuntu setup using ext4 that works just fine.

I have OS X and Windows 8.1 Pro on a primary SSD (Samsung 840 Pro), and the installation of Ubuntu 13.10 that I'm trying to get to appear in Chimera is to be installed on a secondary HDD. As in my many attempts before, I installed Ubuntu on my HDD to an ext4 partition mounted to the root (/) along with some swap space on my HDD, and I've absolutely installed GRUB on that same ext4 partition. Chimera doesn't display the Linux penguin or any icon for Ubuntu at all. I only see OS X and Windows, and reinstalling Chimera doesn't change anything either. I'm doing a Legacy install of Ubuntu.

I have a Gigabyte Z87X-UD5H, and both my SSD and HDD are SATA drives on the chipset interface (as opposed to the Marvell 88SE9230 chip). Is there a way to make Chimera display a specific icon and text for a boot option? Using the same SSD/HDD arrangement, I can get a FAT32 partition to appear that will load GRUB, but it displays a HDD silhouette. If I can change this icon to a Penguin and fix the text, I'd be happy.

Would my troubles have anything to do with the new version of Chimera 2.2.1?

Try installing Windows or OS X to that same HDD. Just to see if Chimera is able to recognize *anything* on that drive (actually I think Chimera will list any partition that is NTFS, even if it empty and not-bootable).

Also, you didn't mention what version of Linux you're installing. My blog was written with 12.04LTS.
