OS X 10.9 Mavericks is now available free from the Mac App Store. Anyone who has purchased Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.7 Lion, or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion will be able to upgrade for no cost. This is the first time a major OS X release has ever been free.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks is Apple's next version of their desktop operating system, succeeding OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. They have detailed many new features such as improvements to Finder and Safari, as well as the addition of iBooks, Maps, and better support for Multiple Displays. As far as design, Apple has finally also gotten rid of "linen" backgrounds. For more info check out http://www.apple.com/osx

Necessary for Mavericks Update

To proceed with installation, you absolutely need the following.

  • Intel Core 2 or above, 64 bit CPU
  • A computer running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later
  • Mac App Store Account
  • Internet access to download the Mavericks Install App through Mac App Store
  • About 5GB free hard drive space available in /Applications

Recommended Best Practices

When performing any full operating system upgrade, unexpected things can occur. To avoid data loss, these best practices should be adhered to. This upgrade should be a breeze, but if things do go wrong, you can always go back to your working installation.

  • Back Up All of Your Data
  • Buy a spare 8GB USB drive
  • Clone your working drive

Download OS X 10.9 Mavericks from the Mac App Store (link). And check out our full walkthrough guide here!

C'mon guinea pigs! Go get it!

do we use the same steps as before to install on our hackintosh systems??? Or do we have to wait for further coding instructions before proceeding?
