Professional HD (2K) video editing i7 4930K - GA-X79-UD5 - GTX 770 2GB issues?

UPDATE: March 15th -2014

In 2013 I started a thread for an i7 4930K, GTX 770 4GB hackintosh for (4K) video editing with Premiere Pro/ After effects/ colour grading. Since then I researched a lot, and only found issues and problems. (See all threads)

Since yesterday the hardware is finally in the buyers guide!!! So it is supposed to work now, right?
It mentions "workarounds are necessary for full support" Yes, we got that already, as most of us are still struggling with kext, kernels, and so on. But what are the exact work arounds? What are the steps to take?

I don’t care that much any more which motherboard, as long as it works, is stable, easy to hackintosh for newbies. If Tonymac suggests the Gigabyte Motherboard I can live with that, although I still would prefer a Rampage IV Extreme or similar one.

So please help me to set up an easy step by step guide for a fully functioning powerful 6 core i7 4930K Mac Pro 10.9.2

If your going to be using premier pro for your editing you may be better off staying with windows. Adobe and Apple relationship when it come to video editing software is strain at best. The advantage to moving to OS X is Final Cut Pro and Motion.

Dual CPU option is not practical in my opinion unless your one of the top builder here on the forum. Lots of custom configurations that will have to keep current with the OS updates.

I would recommend you really think about your storage, connectivity, and processor needs first. You will need gigantic amounts of all three to work effective with Raw 4k data. Are you going to use a San? RAID, fiber thunderbolt?

If your going to editing a lot of 4k for pay get one of the new Mac Pro's ( If it has to 100% reliable wait for 1.01 update for the new Mac Pro.). If your heart is set on a system you built yourself then you'll probably want to consider waiting for the thunderbolt 2 motherboard due mid Nov. GA-X87-UD7H TH.

Aside from a reliable system connectivity should also be as top item on your list. More and more AjA, Black Magic devices will be shipping with thunderbolt ports. More 4k cameras are going to be shipping with thunderbolt. Etc..

I'm weighing the same choice, x79 with 64GB and 6 cores or x87 32GB and 4 cores.

I'm waiting until the 22nd or until the NDA for Mavericks is lifted for when the super builders on the forum are able to talk about their new Mac Pro builds supporting thunderbolt 2.

Anyway, here's what I'm looking to build:

Not doing any 4k yet and most of my project have 6 or fewer streams of HD on a timeline.

Ga-x87-ud7h th or ga-x87-ud5h th. motherboard. 4770k hasswell 3.5ghz CPU over-clocked to 4ghz

256 gb SSD system drive
2x 120 SSD caches drives, one for video, one for light room

4 TB 2x 2TB WD Black 2 drive in a scary raid 0. For rendering files and replaceable assets.

16TB thunderbolt raid 5 Clients assets working files and archive

1ea fire, and water proof Safe; slag bolted to the slab with complainant hungry guard dog for clients original assets.

Thanks a lot!

premiere pro for your editing you may be better off staying with windows.
I have a Mac Pro 2008, 2x Quad Core Intel Xeon and I don't want Windows. Premiere Pro works great on Mac and is better than Final cut (but thats a different discussion;-)
I just can't afford the MAC pro 2013 (and don't like its connectivity) That's why I am here. I want an affordble Mac Pro. I am willing to invest quite some time to make it work, but DO want the system to WORK correctly . I don't have 4K (yet), and that's not a must, but I want a 'future' proof system (for 3-4 years)

If your heart is set on a system you built yourself...
NO. That's why I will ask a computer store to build it and install Windows on 1 disk. I thought when it is build, it would not be so difficult anymore to install Mac OSX myself, but maybe I am wrong? (Don't know anything about programming, but i can read ;-)

Ga-x87-ud7h th 4770k hasswell 3.5ghz

Damn.. I was just past that 'station'. I first definitely wanted the GA-X87-UD7H TH (expected it mid-September) and I was doubting for a long time between i7 4770K and i74930K. But it seems the i7 4930K outperforms 1.4 times (because the 2 cores extra) in especially Premiere .

That's why I thought I had to go for the more professional 2011 socket.

But I would love Thunderbolt (2), and don't mind to lose a little bit speed over that. I would really appreciate to save some money ;-), so I think it comes down to this question:

Is the consumer i7-4770K professional, reliable and fast enough so I can fluently edit (and render) 100 hours of different compressed HD material ( .mts / mxf ) in Premiere/ Afx (and in low resolution perhaps edit 2K?)
If people have the 4770K PLEASE LET ME KNOW?

If not. The question remains: Will my socket 2011 configuration work in the nearby future (I don't like to buy outdated hardware like the 3930K )?

I wish I could speak for 4740k, (mid Nov I'll be able to). But my current system has being running for three years nearly contentious. The only is so for is my water cooler stop working causing the system to shut down. Replaces with bigger cooler. I don't edit every day but I do encode one hell of a lot ox x264 video ;). Last batch ran 9 days continues at 100%. I bet the 4770k will give the same quality of services.

No experience with that processor. Ivy Bridge-E will require a modded kernel from what I've found elsewhere, at least for now. Am watching the -E stuff for a possible future upgrade.

I really like my X79 system personally. For your needs, I would recommend (as someone else did) paying a lot of attention to disk throughput. Can't advise you there, as I don't have a dedicated card. The on-mobo stock disk performance on mine (Asus P9X79WS) doesn't exactly scream. Everything else is pretty snappy with a E5 2320 Xeon...

A new build is always exciting, though!

I am a post sound editor. I definitely wanted thunderbolt for future connectivity. If i were you i would do the same. There are some nice video interfaces available with Thunderbolt and i expect some HD's with it too. Although USB3 would do too for HDs.

So, maybe indeed wait for this GA-Z87X-UD7 TH. The counter side is that it will be a new MOBO and you'll be an early adopter.

I do think complex HD (2K) video editing/ effects needs more power/ cores compared to sound. I would love thunderbolt and I am willing to give up some speed for that.

But NOT if it will be too slow for good professional editing. The benchmarks are all giving different results:
At some places I've read the 6 cores can outperform the 4 cores by 30-45 % when all cores are used (such as with PP) in other cases they write that with multi threading it is only 10-15% different. I suppose I can live with a 10-15% less speed. I can perhaps put another GTX card in to compensate a bit.

I currently have 8 cores (2x Xeon processors in MAC PRO), and although they are old I would like to have a 2 ( or 3) times improvement. I am afraid this will not be the case with only half the amount of consumer cores.
My Geekbench (on a 6 years old Mac) is around 11K. The i4770 often only gets 15-17K.

Perhaps the 2011 mobo will later on get a PCI-e card with thunderbolt, but perhaps it is not hackintosh compatible... If it will be compatible, I will be only lacking Power management, etc (if I get the system running at all ;))

I think there is just too little differences between Consumer > Prosumer/ Pro.
I don't mind to pay 400-500 more, but it is very frustrating you get just a bit more, but also quite less...
(especially in the hackintosh case, outdated mobo's etc)

More money / more professional should mean : better in all cases.
Professionals now are tempted to choose con/prosumer because it offers more. I think that is stupid.

I work in video editing, and creating DCP (Digital Cinema Pack) which requires constant work from the processor to 100% for hours, creating DPX image sequence in teras occupying hard disk. Also for the reproduction of DCP requires the power of a good processor, with 4770k or 3770K, video sequences of 250 mbs have lost pictures. With 3930K works perfect. In Windows is accomplished with a 4770K helped one 580GTX graphics card or higher. In MAC.
Premier works much better on Mac than on Windows.

Thanks! Lorengrin. I don't mind to wait a bit longer during rendering, but I do need Premiere Pro to playback tons of HD material fluently. (also with some video/ audio effects). But I also would like to have thunderbolt, (which is only available on the i7 4770K.) Would you strongly suggest the faster 4930K and 'sacrifice' Thunderbolt, (speedstep, powermanagement, older motherboard)?

Off topic: I know DCP and I need to make one in a while. Perhaps I'll ask a company, or do you have/ know a clear list I can follow so it will work? I know it's not that difficult, but difficult to check if the export went well....
