You should be able to cut off the 4 pin molex connector and reattach the SATA connector further back to shorten up the wire.

Edit: depending how the SATA power connection is made

Thanks for the advice, boys. So I think the molex plug will just pop off leaving a few grooves in the individual cables. One SATA connector comes off the same way, but the end SATA connector is a typical end plug - encased in plastic. Is it possibly to sleeve the cables? I mean, can I make a snip at some point near the molex plug, slide some sleeving and heatshrink on each cable, solder them back together and be good to go? Doing it that way would mean the little bit between the two SATA plugs would remain on sleeved. Would this look ok? Would it be worth it to remove the one SATA plug as well and put a shorter bit of sleeving on there too so that I could sleeve that section?

minihack, nice idea with the can, although I foolishly threw it away already. Wife didn't like having it lying around with two small kids in the house.

You might want to pick up a molex to inline SATA adapter and harvest a plastic SATA connector off of it. It will attach the same way as the inline molex connector on your cable attaches. While you have it all apart that would be a great time to sleeve everything.

This is a really awesome guide on building fancy SATA power connectors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls14BmwkeWg

Here's how I used the method in the video for my G5 mod

Alright fellas, I hope you are happy with the changes I made. I opted to not try to sleeve my power cable, instead i just removed the white molex plug and put a little electrical tape over the exposed wire. Ghetto, I know but that is the title of this thread. Also, the cable is folded up a bit so you can't see the ugliness. Speaking of ugliness, I am aware that I can just get rid of the folded up cable with a cable shortening exercise. I may do that at some point, but this was eay and did not require me to break out the soldering iron. I hope this meets your exacting standards for tidiness, minihack.

Looks lovely.

I wouldn't change a thing if I were you......

:)

However, as you know we are always trying to do a little more here and a little extra there, what do you think about putting this little guy behind one of the three holes on the right side of the front? The board it self is small enough that it would not stick beyond the edge. You would only see it when looking at a 3/4 angle. The wiring is a simple USB splice. On the one hand I am tempted to do just to do it, but on the other I have a Mac Mini and never use the remote. I never used the remote with any of my Mac laptops or iMacs. I only use it with my AppleTV so it would only be going in there so I could say it was in there. I suppose I could just as easily toss it into my Mac Pro, but again... I never use the remote.

Do it if you think you might use it. Or if you just need another excuse to play with your mod (!).

I've done that on various builds but to be 100% honest I can't say I ever really used it.

Updated this damn thing. Why are we never satisfied? At least there was a functional reason for the update - once I swapped the DQ77KB for the DH61AG I had 2 extra SATA ports which let me reintroduce the optical drive. I also flipped the handles around and shortened my cables so that there is less spaghetti inside. While it was difficult to see the spaghetti before.... it was there. I purchased a Thermaltake do-hickey that puts 2 2.5 drives into a 3.5 enclosure. It has two SATA ports and one power port. I think Neilhart has used this product in one of his builds.

So this is where I am now. I am debating whether to put the front shield back on so that you do not see the optical drive. The optical drive isn't particularly sexy - I think I actually preferred the look before, but I like the option of having the optical drive available. I am also contemplating adding a power LED somewhere. I currently have the touch sensor working as a proximity switch - my finger goes near it and it glows.

Thoughts on re-adding the steel plate to the front?

Where/how would you add a power LED? I would want it to be centered somewhere. I have thought about illuminating that big grey apple on the front, but that is obnoxiously large. With the whole naked cube thing, it is particularly challenging because you can't hide the behind the scenes ugliness.

Eagerly awaiting feedback. Cheers.

No, I have not forgotten about my 3D printed bottom. My guy is just busy with school being back in. Apparently his students and their coursework is more important than my hobby/addiction. Weird.
