Choosing the right color profile

Decided to stop cluttering the Installer 6.1 thread so I made a new one.

The color profiles provided by the Installer are not ideal. There are different models of display that HP ships with ProBooks, so that's why I need YOUR help to choose the best one for YOUR display model!

Here's my pack of 60 different color profiles: https://www.dropbox.com/s/snwyqsiuhlnqsdf/60 color profiles.zip
Unzip the file and put all of the .icc files into ~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles
If there's no "Profiles" folder there, create one. Also, if you don't see Library folder in your user folder - use "chflags nohidden ~/Library".
Then go to System Preferences -> Display -> Color and check each color profile from the list. Choose one which you like best - both subjectively and with some help from http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php and other test pages there. (especially http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast.php - see if you could distinguish each "step", "block")
People who have done this - please post your display model - you can obtain it with this command:

ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

and the prefered color profile so that we could make a list. Thanks!

Also, if none of these in the pack looks good for you - post your display model anyway. If one of the ones already included in the Installer looks best - specify which one is it!

And by the way - I thought before this whole thing is rather irrelevant - until I saw the difference between the ones included in the Installer and some of those that people have made and posted online... Of course, "your mileage may vary"!

best color profile(s):
6500k mba (warmer)
mba 280 (colder, more natural - but contrast seems a bit too high, blues look harsh)
Spyder4Express (I guess the best one, natural colors, wide gamma, no excessive warm/cold tint)


Also, if none of these in the pack looks good for you - post your display model anyway. If one of the ones already included in the Installer looks best - specify which one is it!

For now I'm using the 6500k mba one (that for me is my new best of all).
I will download your new color profiles folder from dropbox and test the Spyder4Express one and let you know!
BTW thanks a lot because I was watching video and images losing a lot of quality/details.

Oh that was the thing that pissed me most. Watching anything dark was almost impossible. Not anymore!

I got a bit dizzy checking so many profiles, but I think my preferred one is : Air - Calibrated - AC15

hi, this is noob territory for me, but 60 color profiles is a lot!

here's what my output says from that cmd line.

B121EW09 V3

according to google - AUO panel made of glass.
havent tried the color profiles. will post back later.

wouldnt mind replacing it with an ips panel at some stage.

edit: i think the standard current probook 4x30s profile is best for this display. cooler bright neutral.

and here's what the test page said

If you are using a Mac, it is very important that you are aware of the color management issues mentioned above. Macs are more likely than Windows systems to apply corrections to the image before sending it to the monitor. This is a good thing when you browse the web, but not if you want to calibrate your monitor.
You can find your color profile under Apple > System Preferences > Displays > Color. If you have no color profile, you can check under > Calibrate > Gamma. It should be set to 2.2 (not 1.8) for this test.
The above is to enable optimizing the monitor settings. If you wish to test the system color profile combined with the monitor, you can re-enable the color management. In this case, you have to view the test images in Safari, because other browsers such as Firefox (up to version 2.0) will ignore the sRGB "perceptual encoding" tag that is embedded in the test images.

Could you please be more specific about the "standard" profile? You could check its name and location by hovering your mouse pointer over it in System Preferences -> Display -> Color.

And regarding this info you've quoted - it's basically about resetting the system-imposed settings (gamma, especially) before you would continue to calibrate your display by yourself. We're using profiles that are already made. Before you ask - I've tried calibrating my display with the tool provided by Apple several times. It's pretty bad, even in the Advanced mode it lacks lots of stuff. There's an app called SuperCal which is way better and it was used to make few of those profiles I uploaded. It costs ~$19 if I remember correctly.
However - the best way to properly calibrate your display and create a suiting color profile is to use a colorimeter - a tools like Spyder. It's pretty expensive so it's a no-no for me.

great idea dude, i went throught the list of 60, and including the others already there and my head is now aching from the huge colour/light contrasts. can try again later on. but for now i like the above. cheers


fyi, the colorsync utility popped up in the background, with the option to repair/verify.

Yup, hands down best one for our Samsung displays - at least in my opinion​, yours may vary Blacks are blacks, greys are greys, there's no green tint all over it (like it was with HP ProBook 4530s profile). Huge improvement. Spyder4Express is less warm than 6500k mba, whites are more natural - but it's up to you which one you'll choose.

Also, didn't point it before - if you're using Flux - close it before testing

Looks like few of your profiles were messed up, but what's more interesting - few of which came with the OS/Installer/Adobe stuff. How exactly did you install those that were uploaded by me? 'Cause I can see them showing in /Library, not in ~/Library...
Still, that's pretty irrelevant.

Yesterday I tried the 6500k mba one and is totally another story (better) compared to the 4530 original.
Today I will try the Spyder4Express one and I will compare it with the 6500k mba to see which one it will be the winner.
I will test them watching the pixar movie "The Brave" (that is very dark).
I'll let you know and thanks again; I was searching a solution for this from a long time (it was the major "problem" for my hackintosh (bluetooth apart)).
