Article: Building a CustoMac: Buyer's Guide April 2013

Hi, thank you for all the valuable advice. I am in the process of purchasing the recommended hardware to assemble my first computer! The usb flash drive recommended, I presume, to download the software from this website is no longer available on Amazon. This may be a trivial question, but is this particular flash drive the only one compatible with the hackintosh process or will just about any usb drive do the trick?

Most any USB stick will work as long as it's 2.0 and not 3.0. Makes it less complex
to get working in certain Mobo USB ports. Some have reported problems with the
HP branded flash drives so avoid those.

I've been preparing a shopping list for a CustoMac Pro, and I came across a newer model for the Seagate SATA 6.0Gb/s 1TB HDD. The newer model works with a 64 Mb cache instead of the 32 Mb of the recommended model.

I was wondering if building with the newer model would be alright... It's also half the price (at least here in Canada), so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a no brainer, double the cache and half the price, go for it.

Be aware of the boot problems associated with most new drives. Tonymac have gone to great length to suggest working parts. If this is to be the drive that has you operating system and other software as well as data files, then you need to be aware of the 'Boot 0 Error' problem: http://www.tonymacx86.com/25-boot0-error-official-guide.html

The following text is from the Tonymac April 2013 guide - May guide will be available around the 15th of the month

System Drives

We recommend using a solid state drive (SSD) for your system or boot drive for maximum performance and a traditional hard drive for your data. For these drives, we recommend the Sandisk Extreme as they use toggle NAND flash and Sandforce controllers. This combination provides the highest performance and doesn't require TRIM being enabled. If you don't go with a SSD system drive, choose a 1TB or less hard drive for Chimera/Chameleon to boot from. Also, look for for a boot drive that that uses 512 byte blocks as the Advanced Format 4K drives require workarounds.. The following drive examples have been hand picked to work without issues.

Storage Drives

The data or storage drives listed here were chosen for their large capacity and speed. However, we don't advise using them as your boot drive.

Just wanted to highlight this to make you aware of the Boot 0 issue incase you had not seen it.

Good luck with your CustoMac build :)

Take care! The link to the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5-TH to Amazon.IT is wrong. The link point to the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP4-TH !!!
I just received the board and I discover it after a while. I hope it will not compromise the x86 installation. :(
