I am trying to install mountain lion using unibeast on a Vostro 3460 but have come against the still waiting for root device problem.

I know from research this can mean using a usb 2.0 drive but my problem is the Vostro only has usb 3.0 ports.

Is there any way around this? Picture attached from start up.

Copy GenericUSBXHCI.kext to your USB's /Extra/Extensions folder. Current version is available from here: https://github.com/RehabMan/OS-X-Generic-USB3

Thanks for this, just been trying to dint the extras folder where about is this located and do I need to create the usb stick again?

Thanks!

Now installed ml using that kext and tonymac kext installer but the next problem is once booted no usb drives work hence cant install anything from unibeast

You don't install anything from Unibeast. You install things using Multibeast after you install OS X. You should still be booting from the Unibeast USB into your install after the base install is done. If you install GenericUSBXHCI into the USB's /Extra/Extensions directory (as I said in a previous message), you will have the driver available before running Multibeast on your install, therefore your USB ports will be working. If you did something different, like installing it to the USB's /S/L/E, then it won't.

Follow what I said, and it will work.

Hello sorry im new to this, I used unibeast and got that to work with usb 3 port by adding that kext using tonymacs kext installer and it installed fine then comes to the desktop but then no usb ports are working so am unable to install drivers using multibeast also have no internet, dvd etc. I no longer have a mac and used a virtual machine so its hard had to loose windows to try this

I'm going to assume you installed GenericUSBXHCI.kext to /S/L/E of the Unibeast USB. You can use Terminal to make the necessary changes. So boot into the OS X installer using your Unibeast USB, then choose Utilities -> Terminal:

Code:
# if you need reminding about what you named things...
ls -l /Volumes
# assuming the volume name of your Unibeast USB is Installer
cp -R /Volumes/Installer/System/Library/Extensions/GenericUSBXHCI.kext /Volumes/Installer/Extra/Extensions

Then reboot into your OS X install using the Unibeast USB key (now modified to have USB3 kext in /Extra/Extensions), and you should be able to access the USB to run/transfer multibeast, etc.

Thanks for taking the time to help, I realised that the usb did work with a usb mouse just not any usb memory sticks or hard drives which was weird, anyway I finally managed to get multibest burned onto a cd and it run from that.

after installing drivers including the bootloader and intel hd4000 startup was okay to apple logo but then instead of desktop I got a blank screen. will have another play tonight but seems the vostro 3460 is not the easiest hackintosh.

That's pretty normal for HD4K, actually. You need DSDT edits for most laptops to select the correct ig-platform-id. Or a boot loader that can provide it for you (enoch's latest Chameleon has some nice options for this). I prefer to do the DSDT edits...
