Ersterhernd's G4 Cube Project

I haven't quite got the cube back together yet, so I don't know how quiet it's going to be. I'm waiting on the Noctua fans, a PCI riser, a USB chassis bracket, and some other items to tie it all together.

During my test fit, I did find the cables - particularly the SATA cables - difficult to route. I was looking for some slim/thin/flexible SATA cables to see if that would make matters easier. Using the HDD also doesn't help, as it takes up a lot of the usable space.

I am waiting to hear back from Edisen on the Credit Card confirmation - if in fact they are looking at having the capability in the next 30 days or so.

Meanwhile, I am looking at picking up another cube so I can do an even better job, as well as find one that is in better condition (this one has hairline cracks along at the top mounting screw points - I drove about 150 miles locally to pick it up, and decided that I didn't want to go home empty handed. For $100 US, I figured it was good for my first Cube project). They are hard to find at reasonable prices. I found one in Michigan (I have family there) that has been owned by a Apple store employee since it was purchase new, and it looks extremely well taken care of, so I'm going to try to find a way to get it sent to Arizona. Includes original keyboard, mouse and monitor (17"). I am also looking for a matching 23" Cinema Display, but they are also hard to come by. And the ADC / DVI adapters are also more expensive than all of the hardware!

Sounds like you're well on your way to completion metaldog. I agree with all your points made. On the hardware side, these vintage items are tough to find in excellent condition and I personally don't see it getting any easier, especially when trying to buy locally.

Post some pics too!

Cheers....

I'll try to get some pics up this weekend.

Somehow while disassembling the handle from the slide-brackets that mount to the heatsink/frame, the plastic spring-loaded sliding frame piece broke, near the end where the locking pin engages with the locking piece. It took me three attempts at finding an adhesive that would bond with the plastic and be strong enough to withstand the sliding and locking/unlocking action. It's been one of the more frustrating parts of this project - I finally (yesterday) was able to repair the piece, and 24-hours later, it appears to be holding up.

Old plastic parts don't take kindly to anything but gentle handling, or so I have found out the hard way!

Ouch!

I never disassembled the latching mechanisms in any of the three Cubes I did. I worked around them instead, by the sounds of your experience Metaldog, I'm really glad I did.

Looking fwd to those pics...

Oh...I had one of those break on me a couple of years ago. I never found anything other than a temporary fix for it. In the end I had to find a replacement (not easy).

Hi all, just a short demo video of watching TV on the i3 Cube. I run an unfiltered HD Over-The-Air signal through my SiliconDust HDHomeRun which converts it to a network protocol. The resulting signal is grabbed by the EyeTV software on the Cube and run full-screen without any lag whatsoever. The i7 Cube works flawlessly at this task as well. I use the wired ethernet ports as Wifi just isn't robust enough for EyeTV to run without some degree of pixelation on the screen.

It was recorded with an iphone so is good up to 720p.

Question on your i3-3225 builds:

Do you have fully working SLEEP/WAKE functions?

I am still having a very perplexing problem, where it is taking 5 minutes (almost exactly) to wake from sleep. The sleep mode is power led blinking, cpu fan OFF, screen blank. When it is commanded to wake, by either keyboard or mouse, LED goes steady, CPU fan spins, but display remains OFF. Also, all USB ports appear to be OFF as well. Ethernet port shows flashing LEDs.

I was wondering if you could post copies of your working DSDT/SSDT files, as well as org.chameleon.Boot.plist in order for me to try to figure out what is going on. Although it may not be worth trying to fix, I get kind of obsessed over getting things working perfectly!
