Hi all. Ive been looking at some coolers. I have already decided on my PSU which requires me to buy it o/s ( I'm Australian and we get a very small range here ). Anyway to save on shipping and consolidate potential items I'm quite keen to get other items at the online store from the states.

for some reason I like the look of this cooler and fixated on it.

but im worried it won't fit as its 166mm high. I will be using a laser hive tray and I don't need the g5 glass cover on. I have my G5 mac but I can't acces it as its waiting for me back in Sydney and won't be able to head back until mid June (I'm currently in rural city ) so I can't measure it. I'm hoping some members here out of goodwill can measure their g5 case off a laser hive motherboard tray to see if it will fit.

The second issue I have, but im assuming is ok is if I use low profile ram on a GA Z77 N motherboard it should be ok with this cooler, and won't interfere with graphics card?
im assuming that the cooler was designed to fit all motherboard sizes.

The reason I kinda want to order the PSU now is its on sale now though if I buy it and ship it here on its own the courier costs are just too high, hence adding the cooler with it to make it worthwhile.

any help much appreciated.

I know you don't want guesses, but this may help a bit.

There are two different measurements -

1. For the mATX kits they sit at standard G5 height for the PCI slots to work. This means the motherboard under side is about 14mm from the back wall. If we allow 2mm for thickness of mobo then top surface of mobo is 16mm from back wall.

2. For the ATX kits these sit 4mm higher than the standard G5 height. This means the motherboard under side is about 18mm from the back wall. If we allow 2mm for thickness of mobo then top surface of mobo is 20mm from back wall.

Measurement back wall to the lip that the plastic air deflector would lie against is 187mm.

So for mATX it seems there is 171mm of headroom up to where the air deflector would be.

For ATX it seems there is 167mm of headroom up to where the air deflector would be.

The air deflector is 3mm thick, so that then gives respective headrooms of up to 174 mATX and 170 ATX.

I do not know how they measure the 166mm of the cooler height, if it is from the mobo top surface it would seem you will be okay in both cases.....my best guess.

I used the Mountain Mods tray on my first mod. The tray is screwed on the G5 stand offs.
That results in a bigger spacing as with the LaserHive mATX kit.

My current cooler has a height of 158mm and would touch the glass cover.

Like you guessed, your planned cooler might just collide with the glass cover, but the G5 side panel would close!

In my first G5 build, I have a Coolermaster Hyper 212 which (they say) measures 158.5mm. On the end of it I have glued a piece of 1/2" (or 12.5mm) aluminum bar. To that piece of bar I velcroed the G5 CPU coverplate for decorative purposes. Total height is over 170mm.

I use the LH tray in that build, so I'm guessing that your 166mm cooler should make it by about a 1/4" clearance.

That is one macho looking cooler.

Okay I am in the middle of all of these G5 case measurements for the Short Stack project. In round numbers there is 7.87 inches between inside of the G5 case right and left side panels. The 166mm tall Dark Rock Pro 2 is 6.524 inches tall which is 1.35 inches less then the available space. I would think that the combined height of the mounting plate, the standoffs, the board thickness and the CPU socket stack-up height with CPU installed would not exceed the 1.35 inches. This is what I call "back of the napkin" sanity test and usually works out.

And Bit-Tech has a review of and earlier version of the Dark Rock Pro (April 2011) and the rated it very high. And I would not anticipate a problem with normal DIMM sticks with low profile heat spreaders.

I say go for it.

@Wolfie81: Could you tell me if it fitted inside your g5 case? I'm looking forward to buy a Noctua nh-d15 (height 165mm) and put it into a g5 case. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Did you use the ATX-Tray from Laserhive? How much space was left after you've built in everything? Any experiences so far?
