Installing Mountain Lion on GA-P55A-UD4P - i7860 - Sapphire Radeon HD 5870

I just ran a few quick geekbenches. I got about 7900 in geekbench with smbios 12,2 and about 7800 with smbios 9,1.

I'm just going to leave it at 12,2 for now unless there is something I am missing about the process.

jreeve,

For me, it's about Speedstep CPU matching. The imac 11,1 offered an i7-860 as a BTO option, and it does work well for me, getting my power consumption on my rig to under 80W at idle. Some smbios, like Mac Pro 5,1, run at 90W on idle. No way to check SpeedStep since MSRDumper is no longer compatible with P55.

OTOH, If I use Mac Pro 3,1 I don't get that audio "pop" on first output after waking. So... Try Chameleon Wizard if you want to experiment with this.

At some point I'll move with the herd to Ivy Bridge, but this is a really quick machine and it's not like I'm rendering 3D frames or anything. Geekbench is the biggest CPU load I run on my system.

Edit: Sorry for the 9,1 in my previous post, should've read 11,1 (fixed). Also, the 10W drop in idle power since I removed a pair of 2TB LP drives.

Hey Peppy2,

How's it going? I wanted to check in, see how the rig was working. I finally managed to update to 10.8.2. I had to reinstall yet again, so I picked up an SSD on Boxing day and created a Fusion Drive. It seem's pretty quick. My machine boots in half the time it used to.

Have you made the switch to Ivy Bridge yet? I no longer have the funds to make too many upgrades (They seem to be happening every 4 months now haha)

Anyway, Happy New Year!

J

Bonne Année et Bonne Santé J,

I'm running well under 10.8.2, though not perfectly well. I have small hardware compatibility "issues" that have me wishing for a new system that everyone else has, so that the problems I run across are easliy identified and eventually solved. I have a spontaneous crash problem that I *Think* comes from my graphics card, or maybe its my ethernet card. It happens so infrequently that it really isn't worth it to troubleshoot, better to look forward to the next platform.

Funny you should ask today, now that Intel just announced that the release of the Haswell 4770K is pushed back to June. With SSDs, our systems are plenty fast enough for now, I hope you agree. Buying Haswell will give a (hopefully) long lifespan.

When the 2012 Mac Mini was announced, I picked up the mid-range 2.3 Quad i7 to use as a server for Movies, Music and Books. Turns out that little thing out GeekBenches my big rig! I doubled the RAM and installed a SSD with a Disk Doubler and (like you) made a 1.1TB Fusion drive. It really is quiet, pulls around 20W, USB 3.0 works...

I hope this message reveals my mixed feelings on whether or not to spend $$$ in the deliberate effort to build a new Hack. It will always be a Hack, every upgrade could be an adventure.... For example, right now I'm backing up my Blu-ray collection with DVDFab, and my system crashes every so often at the beginning of a rip. Is that DVDFab, or my system? According to the DVDFab forums, my Blu-ray drive is dying, but I swapped it and it's still happening. So now what? Since I've only got 30 Blu-rays, I'll soldier through it.

I'm not griping, (ironically, it just crashed, thanks for Auto Restore!) it's a philosophical question. Spend $1,000 on new CPU/Mem/Mobo/GFX, get a Mac, or just keep what I've got?

Love to hear your take on this, and the stability of your own system.

Not sure if anyone in the forums is still using my hardware or similar on Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I just finally bought an SSD which was the last thing on my list and I am considering upgrading from SL to ML. My Hackintosh has been running pretty great on 10.6.8 for quite a long time. I am not sure about Sleep since I never use it. Always just do my work and shutdown. I have had a few crashes every now and again when I am doing very intensive stuff and multitasking lots of apps like FCP and Adobe but it is still manageable and I have no real complaints.

Can anyone confirm for me if I will be able to upgrade Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion without any issues on the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P with a core i7-860?

Thanks.

Working great here, no issues at all. There are a couple of one-time setup quirks, like the need to select the correct audio output in Pref Panel, manually setting audioid in your DSDT, using iMac 11,1 smbios. I've enabled all of the advanced CPU settings in BIOS (vs "Auto") for best, consistent Geekbench, even after wake from sleep.

It's a well-beaten path, you'll have no problems that you can't find answers for here. My system is 100% stable in every way after giving up on USB 3.

Glad to hear you are running good. My version of this mobo doesn't have USB3 to my recollection, so I am not worried about that. I have several external SATA drives and am plenty happy with the speed of those at this point as well.

Can you elaborate on the advanced BIOS settings you are referring to and getting the correct audio?

Thanks.

Well, my upgrade has not gone very well.

So I cloned my original SL install to the new SSD and ran Multibeast choosing only Chimera. At this point I can boot up just fine, but only if I do not connect any of my other internal drives (I had 4 other back up drives installed). If I try to reconnect any of the drives and power on the system hangs on trying to load and doesn't ever go to Apple boot screen. If I wait and connect any drive once the Apple screen comes up, the system hangs. If I try to connect any drive once inside SL, the system freezes.

Can someone please point me in the right direction to solve this problem?

Thanks.

A few guesses:

In BIOS, Advanced BIOS Settings -> Hard Disk Boot Priority -> ?Your SSD?

Are you set up for AHCI mode on your SATA drives?

Make sure you are using the Intel SATA ports for your SSD.

Also, you can't run Multibeast and simply install Chimera, that's not enough. You've got to put your DSDT on the desktop and select "With DSDT" at the minimum. Anyway, search through my previous posts for more information.

Edit: Looking at your post again, you don't mention upgrading from SL to ML before running MultiBeast.

dvd,

After looking at your previous posts, you've got a lot of work / learning to do in order to migrate from 10.6 to 10.8. Also, your FCP and Adobe products need to be at versions that support Mountain Lion.

I would recommend using UniBeast and MultiBeast to create a clean, stable 10.8 SSD install that you can try out / migrate to. You're not going to notice a performance increase, except for the SSD upgrade. If it wasn't for the fact that I have 4 other Macs running 10.8, I would've left my system at 10.6.8. I've had to pay plenty to upgrade my Adobe and SilverFast apps.

HTH
