I've managed to get my HDMI audio working as per the guide (Thanks Toleda!!)

GTX 580

I didn't do enough research when I bought my card and didn't know until now that it won't support bitstream DTS HD and DD TRUE HD. I'm wondering what my options are? It does support LPCM 7.1, but I don't know what that means. I've tried finding out detailed specs but I can't see anything that is clear. The manufacturer claims it will support 16 and 24 bit and 44.1 48 176.4 and 192 kHz, but doesn't specify how. Is it just stereo at 24/192? Can I get 7.1 in 24/96? Has anyone hooked this up to a receiver and put LPCM into it to see what is available?

I'm mostly playing back MKV files. No surround receiver yet, but want to know what I'm looking at here. Most HD audio from blu-rays seems to be 24/48 with a few being 24/96. I'd like to take advantage of this but I'm not sure how to move forward. If the card only does down sampled 16 bit 7.1 then I will have to look at other options. I'm considering running HD audio from the analogue outputs on the back. They seem to be activated in the system. The other option would be to run audio to a receiver from the HDMI on the motherboard, and video from the GPU. Is this possible? In BIOS I have the PCI x16 selected, which seems to preclude the onboard HDMI. Failing that, I may just bite the bullet and get a real card.

One thing that surprised me is that the DVI seems to pass through the audio to HDMI. I can't run direct HDMI as it won't cold boot because of a ROM patch error. I've had this problem for ages and could never solve it so I just run a generic DVI/HDMI adapter to my TV.

Not impressed that this card can't handle bitstream, but I guess it is my tough s*** for not doing more research.

The GTX 580 does support lossless (bit stream) audio. All Nvidia 4xx, 5xx and 6xx support HDMI audio on the DVI ports with a DVI2HDMI adapter. Plex supports LPCM 7.1, see Lossless PCM blu-ray tracks working on 2011 Mini! - Plex Forums. XBMC announced DTS HD and DD TRUE HD, though not available in OS X yet.

There are configuration problems with your GTX 580, however, that is off topic for this forum.

Thanks for the reply, Toleda. And thanks for your most helpful HDMI audio guide.

I have done a lot of google searches on the GTX 580, and they all indicated that bitstream (DD TrueHD & DTS HD) are not supported on this card because it is based on the GF 100. I have read that the GTX 460, however, does support bitstream. Where did you come by your info, and could you link to it please? Is this the result of a recent driver update that added the capability, because it didn't come that way out of the box?

I have no problem with using LPCM *IF* it is HD and not down sampled for multi channel. My problem is, as stated above, that the manufacturer specs aren't terribly clear on exactly what kind of LPCM you are getting. Whenever specs are vague I get suspicious.

As far as the configuration goes, aside from the cold boot issue, everything seems to work fine: system recognized, OpenGL activated, Cinebench scores equal or better than others etc. However, if you think people here could help with that, please suggest the appropriate forum.

Again, I would love to see the source of your info on the GTX 580 bitstream issue.

The GF 100 does not support lossless HD audio. However, the GTX 580 is built with the GF110 and supports HD audio. See Comparison of Nvidia graphics processing units - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Look at the audio source and the player. If the source is DTS HD and DD TRUE HD, the graphics presents the lossless bitstream to the player. If the player supports pass through, source audio is bit streamed to the receiver over the HDMI cable. The best tool to determine the source audio format is MediaInfo.

"Given that the GF110 is a new revision of the GF100 it makes sense that it’s based on the same internal set-up....

...What are the differences, then, between the GF110 and the GF100? Very little in fact, with the main change coming from a refinement of the design allowing for more efficient manufacture of the GPU, slightly higher clocks and lower energy consumption for an equivalent spec thanks to a slight reduction in power leakages.

..The video engine and audio controller haven’t however changed. In contrast to the smaller GeForce 400s, and like the GeForce GTX 480, the GeForce GTX 580 and any other models based on the GF110 will not therefore support bitstreaming of HD audio formats."

I can post other links if you want, but they all say pretty much the same thing. I will have a new surround receiver in the near future. I will post the results of the output I get from various players.

Shame on Nvidia, why would Nvidia would perpetuate that liability?

I can confirm at least 6 channel HD audio (LPCM) through the GTX 580. I used Dark Side of the Rainbow to test. Video is from the Wizard of Oz Blu-Ray. Soundtrack is 5.1 24/96 PCM from the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon Immersion Edition Blu-Ray. I confirmed the file contents with mediainfo and then changed my settings in utilities/audio midi setup to 96000.0 Hz and 8ch-24bit Integer. Changed the settings in PLEX to HDMI/multichannel out. Worked as I'd hoped, and the Yamaha receiver confirmed 96 kHz sample rate (bitrate unavailable on PCM) and the front display showed PCM.

As Toleda showed above with his link, we can get HD audio on a Mac with the extra step of converting a soundtrack to LPCM:

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/36479-lossless-pcm-blu-ray-tracks-working-on-2011-mini/

The GTX 580 will do at least 6 channel at 24/96, and according to the audio midi setup menu, may do up to 8 channels at 24/192. I have nothing to test this with, but am quite happy to be getting 24/96. No bitstream, but with any luck one of the media players will eventually be able to convert DTS HD MA to LPCM on the fly.

Hi guys,
I have a mac pro 3.1 and I tried the guide to enable hdmi audio on my gtx 580. when I launch the script the message is the same: efi partition not found.
But I enabled the efi partition and it compares on my desktop.
what can I do?

thank you very much

The guide does not support HDMI audio on native hardware. Search MacRumors Forums for a native solution. Off topic.
