(90% Success!) GA-Z77X-UP4 TH Instructions and Feedback

After too many hours I have got a somewhat working system and figured a thread on this motherboard is necessary because it is recommend on the buyer's guide yet there's hardly any support for it. If one does not need all the bells and whistles of the UP5 and

My current rig is:
Z77X-UP4 TH

i7 3770k
Intel HD 4000
8GB 1600MHz

First off to get anywhere with the back USB ports, DISABLE xHCI DURING INSTALLATION! If you've done your homework, you know 4 out of the 6 back USB 3.0 ports are never going to work (well, maybe some day with a stroke of luck, but better to have the mindset that they will not). So use the Intel controlled USB 3 ports located next to /under the LAN port.

Other than that, I followed tony's Z77 guide (http://www.tonymacx86.com/99-quick-guide-configuring-uefi-gigabyte-s-7-series-lga-1155-boards.html) for all the other motherboard settings.

Once Mountain Lion successfully installed, I installed Chimera 1.11 to find myself with a bricked system. I used my Unibeast drive and booted "Mountain Lion" to get back into the system.

From there, I used Multibeast 4.6.1 (at the time of writing this 5.0.0 is not out yet) and more or less followed this setup for the following UP5 TH guide HOWEVER I CHANGED:

-Check ALC892 instead of ALC898 for both Non-DSDT HDA Enabler AND patched AppleHDA
-Check 3rdParty SATA, I did NOT JMicron and TRIM Enabler (unless you're using an SSD, then check TRIM)
-I only checked Lnx2Mac's and Realtek Gigabit Ethernet [***ISSUE***] ML sees the ethernet and assigns an IP and a subnet mask but will not connect to DNS or the internet, still working on this

For Integrated HD 4000 graphics, follow this guide: http://www.tonymacx86.com/golden-bu...p5-th-gtx-650-ti-mountain-lion-mavericks.html

All the hardware is identified and sound and graphics are working great. However, I've still got a couple bugs:

-Ethernet is misbehaving, identified but can't connect to the internet [**FIX**] unplugged the PSU for 120 seconds and Ethernet works upon boot

-Sleep won't work. Will now sleep but immediately wakes

Oh, and after running MultiBeast and checking "USB 3.0 - NEC/Renesas and Etron" could I enable xHCI again and "USB Super-Speed Bus" is now showing in System Report

Any suggestions? I'm open to any and all feedback.

Thanks for posting your progress on this. I have to say i really don't think this board belongs on the buyers guide. I think that guide should hold its equipment to a very, very high standard of compatibility and having a bunch of (possibly forever) dead USB ports is a big enough flaw to disqualify in my opinion. I know that this board has a lot of appeal due to its mix of features (namely TB) and price but it just shouldn't be listed in the guide the way it is. At the very least it should have a big red asterisk next to it and a good explanation of its incompatibility issues.

Now as for USB 3.0, the currently available NEC/Etron driver (a hacked lacie driver) will not work in 10.8 by default. Until a new driver is released those of us with NEC/Etron controllers have had to revert our IOUSBFamily, IOSUBStorage, and AppleUSBAudio kexts to DP3 versions (basically a version before intel native XHCI support was added). Then and only then will the NEC/Etron driver work. You should have your Intel ports working without any edits in 10.8, all you need to do is set the UEFI setting to Auto (instead of Smart-Auto). But in the current situation there is no way to use both the NEC/Etron and native drivers together. Further it is unknown as far as i have seen, if the NEC/Etron driver would even work with the Via controller on this board.

For the wake from sleep issue please make sure that the PME event is disabled in UEFI power management options and disable any wake on lan settings. If its still not working then that could be yet another major issue with this board.

Cheers,
g\

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I'll try the NEC/Etron driver and the VIA controller and post my results here.

However with regards to the sleep/wake suggestions I cannot find anything to do with PME Event and I have any and all wake on lan settings disabled, still having difficulty :/ did GB rename PME event to something else on their new boards?

Hi. I pretty much followed your guide and I'm having the same issues with the ethernet. Did you manage to fix it?

Thanks

Hey Rubbershoes, I have the same board and processor. I have ML 10.8 installed but I have a USB issue. Every once in awhile the mouse stops tracking. Then starts again. It happens regularly, Li,e a hiccup. Do you have this problem? I bought a USB bridge that was recommended by "thelostswede" and it happens on that too. My 3.0 USB ports dont work in 2.0 at all. Could this be a kept problem? I really want to resolve this USB issue because other than that the build seems good and stable. Also wondering if you have over locked your rig yet? Let me know. Thanks

Thread resurection time! :)

Anyone had any luck with USB 3.0 ports and 10.8? I bought this mobo when it was recommended and would love to get that final piece of the jigsaw working!

Seer- I have my up4 th up and running but no USB 3 as of now . I also bought a thunderbolt to DVI adapter and don't have TB working yet either. I d love to have USB3 working but right now just getting the primary functions working properly. I tried a Inland USB 3 pci card that was said to work oob with 10.8 to no avail. If you make progress let me know...

Hi folks

I bought really cheap a used Z77X-UP4 TH and i am planning to pair it with a i5 3570k and 2xAsus GT 210 1GB DDR3 (i use 4 monitors )

My plan is to install Lion 10.7.5 for better compatibility with the music softwares that i use.

I don't want to use any USB3 device so if i just disable it from bios i will be able to have all ports working at USB 2 ?

Is any other problem with that mobo except USB ?

I did a very good search but i confused with the success of each person .

thanks

I think you should be fine. You can disable USB3. I dont really think you have to since I NEVER got it working properly anyway. You could also add a USB bridge to add more ports. I did and it helped. Im not at home so I cant tell you if all ports work. You will know immediately when you start plugging in peripherals...

Good Luck!
