I have been trying to fix this for twelve hours straight. I have been up all night. I have people relyingon tis working.

My Snow Leopard hackitoch has been was working perfectly for months, then then night I installed the kext for a serail mouse with Multibeast. I restarted and the xomputer hung at the blue screen after the grey apple screen. Spinner keeps spinning and arrow blinking in corner.

Since then I have restored from a time machine backup, but it is *still* doing the same thing! How can that be if I used a backup from when it was working?

Does Multibeast install anything anywhere other than the System Etensions folder? If I copy that folder from before I installed the kext, then everything should work the same, right?

Please help. I have rebooted a Illion times. I am not making any progress. It is imperative that I get this server back up. But I can't fix it. I don't know what to do.

Thanks

What kind of graphics card you're using in your rig? Also have you tried to remove the kext associated with your graphics card from the System/Library/Extension folder yet? Also have you tried repairing disk permissions from the Applications/Utilities yet? Last thing, have you put back your iBoot disk back into the computer to get to the screen to choose which OS you're planning to boot in? Try that and see what happens.

sounds like your permissions are messed up - this blue screen could be the desktop trying to show up.
You can try to boot from iBoot and select the boot vol and see if this happens again,
Also suggest you try it w the following boot switches
-v -f GraphicsEnabler=No
You can also add the -x ( safe mode to see if this gets it up) to be included in the above so -x -v -f GraphicsEnabler=No
Also you could try to boot from the iBoot CD - then insert the osx DVD AND boot from that to get to the disk utilities so you can check the permissions of the boot drive - repair permissions etc. You could have a fsck issue bad file (kext) or corrupted partition (need to do a file check on the Boot vol - this can be done w the rBoot CD.

If by serial mouse you mean PS2 mouse then you will still need a USB mouse attached, thats been my experience.
Take pics and post also what type of hardware are you using is helpful.

As to Time Machine only useful on a working system - suggest you get a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner for mac - buy online - set up other HD partitions to make backups of so that you can boot from them.

Thank goodness someone finally replied. It has been another 12 hours I have been trying to fix this. It has crashed hundreds of times. I have reinstalled dozens of times. I follow the instuctions in the guide exactly. There has to be something wrong with the guide. Things are missing. I see people telling people to type certain things in at the boot prompt. Then that should be in the guide. It should say to do that if it does not boot so people do not keep asking and answering the same things over and over.

"sounds likee your permissions are messed up - this blue screen could be the desktop trying to show up."

Its is at the point right before the login screen appears with the arrow in the upper left corner. The spinning circle at the bottom of the screen and the arrow in the upper left keep alternating.

"You can try to boot from iBoot and select the boot vol and see if this happens again,"

I have many many many times.

"Also suggest you try it w the following boot switches
-v -f GraphicsEnabler=No"

What does that do?

"You can also add the -x ( safe mode to see if this gets it up)"

I have done that so many times. When i do that here is what happens. On the grey apple screen a progress bar appears at the bottom. When it is nearly full it crashes.

"Also you could try to boot from the iBoot CD - then insert the osx DVD AND boot from that to get to the disk utilities so you can check the permissions of the boot drive - repair permissions etc."

I have also repaired with Disk Utility countless times. The volume bits or something keep getting messed up. I'm guessing from the crashing.

"You could have a fsck issue bad file (kext) or corrupted partition (need to do a file check on the Boot vol - this can be done w the rBoot CD."

Okay. I don't know what that is. I will have to find that.

"As to Time Machine only useful on a working system"

I am able to restore time machine backup with the installation CD. It is one of the tools.

So what so you think happened? Everything was fine. I installed the serial kext in Multibeast and rebuilt. Then when I rebooted It hung at blue screen as I described.

Oh yeah, the hardware...

Motherboard - Gigabyte P61-USB3-B3
CPU - 3.4 GHz i7 Sandy Bridge
RAM - 16GB
Graphics Card - MSI N8400GS

Like I said, it all worked perfectly for many months, and I have backup from when it was working.

I am currently restoring again from backup with Snow Leopard install disc.

Should I install Chimera 1.7 from Multibeast or Chimera 1.11?

But it probably will not even startup using iBoot.

suggest you use Chimera 1.11- works for all OSX's. Its more for the bootloader in fact you may notice that MultiBeast loads this version,

We assume you have a DSDT file

Also as you have a Sandy Bridge CPU you will need to use the program UPDATE HELPER (downloads) and use the
command line switch PCIRootUID=0 for this CPU.
So at the install I would suggest you use these in one line like so

-x -v -f acpi=off PCIRootUID=0 GraphicsEnabler=No

Make note that if you use the -x switch then you do not get the Welcome screen that you see at the initial install. Safe mode turns this off.
if you need to know the functions of these command line switches please read these links.
Something useful info about command line switchs one needs to know !
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/05/bootloader-acpi-flags-while-darwin-bootloader/
This is from 2008 some of these have changed but it still a good read,
http://news.metaparadigma.de/osx86-flags-and-parameters-for-darwin-bootloader-104/

After you inital install use this
-v -f PCIRootUID=0

this is a shorted install procedure that Jester969 did for Sandy Bridge.
How to do a sandybridge cpu w compatible hardware OSX hack 10.6.8 build. jester969

Typical installation steps are:
1) iBoot + Disk Utility + install Snow Leopard DVD (perform install via DVD) reboot
2) iBoot + Installed OSX HDD (boot with iBoot and loading OS via newly installed HDD) - get welcome screen
3) Run Update Helper and Reboot?
4) iBoot + Installed OSX HDD, run combo update 10.6.8 , DO NOT reboot
5) Run Multibeast and select option which are required to your board.
6) Reboot w/out iBoot

Audio/Ethernet/DSDT

DSDT and BIOS firmware must match to the corresponding number.

I do not see an explanation of PCIRootUID=0 and GraphicsEnabler=No.

Because so many permutations with 10.6.8 have failed, I am now trying with 10.6.7 combo installer.

"Chimera 1.11- works for all OSX's. Its more for the bootloader in fact you may notice that MultiBeast loads this version,"

Multibeast 3.10.1 installs Chimera 1.7 for me.

Cosmic.....

GraphicsEnabler is the switch to turn on or off the ability for added GFX function such as Ci/QE or what we know as the ability to shadow image, I may not have the terms correct but if this is set to No then their is more ability for the OSX to not have a crash on some specific video function. THe No turns off added gfx abilities !

PCIRootUID=1 tells the installer regarding your video card. Also this value indicates the location of the GFX card or logic

For non GFX enabled CPUs you would use the 1 as the first slot for GFX located - for CPUs w GFX onboard then its 0 even though your not using it ... me thinks.

As to the Chimera to save time use what MultiBeast has installs ....

"For non GFX enabled CPUs you would use the 1 as the first slot for GFX located - for CPUs w GFX onboard then its 0 even though your not using it ... me thinks."

My CPU has HD 3000 graphics.

If it will not startup using iBoot then it won't from the drive either, right?

Using those boot flags, I can see. He same thing happening, eccept the screen is black and there is a cursor in the upper left instead of the arrow. There is a flash about every ten seconds. I can type at the cursor. When the flash happens the typing is cleared. It is in some kind of loop.

Here is a movie. Any idea what is happening?

Cosmic
Yes your CPU has HD3000 so that would mean you would use PCIRootUID=0

I have looked at the video and really cant understand whats happening with it

Have you installed the OSX from the DVD and these the issues you now after install or is this condition at the start when using iBoot 3.10.x and trying to install.

You can try to boot from the iBoot cd and then select the Hard Drive that has the OSX installed onto it and see if this boots up w any different symptom.

If your Hard drive will not boot but the iBoot CD will boot and load then you have a bad boot loader partition on the HD - using iBoot to boot is ok.

If this is whats so then using MultiBeast you need to install the bootloader and run system utilities before next boot.

Again you need to use the Update Helper as your hardware has a Sandy Bridge CPU.

Also in the boot flags we have another one to try that is the npci

-x -v -f acpi=off PCIRootUID=0 GraphicsEnabler=No npci=0x2000

the npci=0x2000 is an address register for video that is sometimes needed - there are two ranges of address that can be given to the loader. the first is 0x2000 other is 0x3000 : add these to the line first one then the other if the first one is not working,

Also recheck the bios settings in the bios so that they are not changed from before this happened.
just incase any value in the BIOS got changed.

see if either of these will help.

Ok Cosmic your motherboard has no onboard video connector does it - and what is the exact number intel Model Number of this CPU do you know. Intel i5 i7 CPu fist gen not sandy intel 2nd gen i5 i7 are sandy bridge intel 3rd gen i5 i7 are Ivy Bridge

If this is not a Sandy Bridge CPU then you do not use Update Helper or use the PCIRootUID=0

So see what it is if you can - did you make some documentation on this uint or keep the box's so to speak.
