Great Build!
I have a small question, does your build works fine with Airplay Mirror?
Thanks! I do not have an Apple TV 2nd/3rd generation to test Airplay Mirror. Apple's Airport Mirroring Help statement:
AirPlay Mirroring lets you send what’s on your Mac to an HDTV wirelessly with Apple TV.
According to this Apple hardware note: About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion
Requirements for AirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion
An Apple TV
Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with software update v5.0 or later

However, I do have an Airport Express hooked to my Audio/Video Receiver and can play iTunes music in my home theater setup. I can do this with all my hackintoshs and macintoshs.

I also have an HacHTPC (see my signature block) so I really don't have a need for Airport Mirroring. But, I don't see any reason why Airplay Mirroring shouldn't work. But, I'll ask tony.

Update: tonymacx86 has tried it and Airplay Mirroring works on a hack running MtLion.

Thanks Stork. Could you please give the URL?

I can see many case where Airplay Mirroring works with MtLion and HD4000 as the only graph adapter. But nobody Explicitly say that a discrete cad is work with helping of HD4000/HD3000.

I'm thinking about doing this build and have a couple questions.
Are there any known problems that you have had with the build? How stable is it and are there any downsides that you know of of using this motherboard? Im a little weary about buying the Z77X but I would like thunderbolt ports.
How do the native 4000 graphics run? Any problems with those and is it worth getting a graphics card if im not gaming or video editing?
Also, would 16 Gigs or ram make a difference Vs. your 8?
Thanks

aswiec92,
It works as described in my build description. I started out with HD4000 because 1) I wanted to see how it performed vs HD3000 in my Zorro build (I like it!) and 2) because I wanted to test it for tonymacx86. So, the HD4000 is not a problem. I updated to the EVGA 650 Ti graphics card for the reason I stated. If I wasn't a beta tester for tonymacx86 and MacMan, I'd keep the unit at HD4000 for general purpose computing.

Here's my advice:
  • Thunderbolt peripherals are very expensive, so if you don't need Thunderbolt, put your money elsewhere;
  • HD4000 worked great for me even in GarageBand, so start out with HD4000 then upgrade if you need more graphics power; and
  • 8GB of memory is good enough for my needs - you can always get more when it goes on sale.
I recommend you also read other Forum members GA-Z77X-UP5-TH based build descriptions in the Golden & User Builds forum section for more information. Also check the Mountain Lion Desktop Guides forum section for relevant information.

Hope this helps. Good luck. We're here to help.

From my experience with the board it is the video card. Either put it in or take it out and see if you get past it.
I had countless hours of trying to get everything going. Just do it and see. Then I added in card later and no problems.

Hey Stork. Awesome thread. Your builds are always easy to copy thanks to great instructions.

I am building a new Hack for my wife. Her current Z68Mx-Ud2h, 2500k, 6850 build is having recurring issues, and after weeks of trouble shooting I've decided to just start a new build. Comparing the HD3000 to the 4000, did you notice any difference. I have a Z68X-UD3H with 2600k and gtx670 that I use and it works great. I bought a new 3570k on Black Friday $190 and got an openbox Z77X-UD5H for $135, in hopes that they can replace wife's buggy rig.

My question is, from your experience with Zorro and thunderball, which would be a better home office/media server rig, and have full wake on LAN/Apple TV demand: a z68x-ud3h/2600k/HD3000 OR a Z77x-UD5H/3570k/HD4000? Or would be pretty similar (aside from hyper threading the two rigs appear to have similar performance).

Thanks for your kind words. Hopefully, the Stork is delivering the goods. :D

My server is a Synology DS-110j with a 2TB WD Green drive. It uses less power than a PC server and does every thing I want in a server. The throughput with a server is the Ethernet speeds; today's computing systems are plenty fast for home networks.

That said, I'd go with the Z68. Although you'll have a big box for it, it works OOB for everything I throw at it.

Hey Stork great job on the build!

I was wondering if it's best to have the Thunderbolt device plugged-in & powered-on before boot up?

After completing a successful build myself with the same board (listed in my sig & profile), I found that I haven't been able get my system to correctly recognize any Thunderbolt devices, even thought I was successfully able to transfer files to & from a Thunderbolt hard drive...

I don't own any Thunderbolt devices yet - that is why I haven't been able to test further...

Ultimately I want to use an audio interface that operates via Thunderbolt..

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! Yes, turn on the peripherals first, then boot up.

I don't own any Thunderbolt peripherals, yet, either. However, it recognized my FW800 external drive when I used a Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter. I believe it will take a BIOS revision or two and Apple's next 10.8.3 update to get more Thunderbolt performs. That's what we get for being early adapters.

I haven't a clue what the thread is all about.
