Yeah dude. Nice job! Seriously, awesome job.

I'm getting there... slowly

Hey BoomR,

First of all, dope studio.

Secondly, I am planning to build a hack similar to yours with Snow Leopard (primarily for just production/mixing...recording when I get the gear) and am wondering if I would be set with that i7-2700k for 3+ years. I use Pro Tools 9(no hd cards) and want to be able to use 60+ plugins smoothly with VST's.

I need to purchase ASAP but I am weary as this is my 1st Hack and I don't want too much trouble with an Ivy Bridge snow leopard install.

Very cool!

Glad to see you're running well with Pcie. I'm running a Lynx Aurora via FW with a similar setup and it runs well, but not perfect. Its a p67 mobo and i've tried the onboard FW and the syba TI card.

I guess i'm going to have to byte the bullet and go PCIe.

I've got a whole heap of experience with the Aurora and firewire... Would put money on the fact that its not your computer, its the Lynx FW-LT card.
The USB card for the Aurora actually performs better, but the very best can be got out of them by using it via AES, with an RME AES-32 card.
I've used loads of Lynx stuff and unfortunately they missed the boat on the firewire card :(

Thanks NitroG! Appreciate it! And apologies for the delay on replying. For some reason, I'm no longer getting email alerts when someone replies to this thread... :banghead:

To be honest, it's hard to say whether you'll be able to get 60+ plugins/VSTs. Many plugs have very little overhead... others have a BUNCH. There is no real magic formula or way to predict how many plugs & VSTs you'll be able to get, to be honest. But my particular build hardly breaks a sweat on my stuff - and I'm using quite a few high-end VSTs (Spectrasonics, Native Instruments, etc).

Hopefully you've been able to make your purchase & do your build by now. Please let me know how it all came out!

Cheers!

What kind of diffusion/absorption boards are those in your pics, BoomR? DIY or pre-made?

Again, apologies for the delay in reply - for some reason, I'm not getting emails when people reply to this thread.

The room treatments are a combination of pre-made & DIY. MOST of what you see - the 12" x 48" x 2" columns are made by Primacoustic - those are the "Broadway" series - they're called "Control Columns": http://primacoustic.com/broadway.htm Got them through my GC Pro (Guitar Center) rep. I have the ones that are non-beveled edges. They hang directly on the wall using the Primacoustic mounting brackets.

The 24" x 48" x 2" that you see as the corner fills/along the ceiling line are DYI. I found this PDF on how to create then yourself:
View attachment DIY-BASS-TRAPS-MADE-EASY.pdf

I made just a couple tiny tweaks to the design & esp. the hanging mechanism (my own spring tension idea). I also went to a HUGE fabric warehouse store here in the Dallas area & was able to find almost the EXACT black fabric material that was used in the commercially produced Primacoustic control columns. You cannot even tell them apart! Totally lucked out on that one! BTW, You can click here to take you to a Picasa photo album of how I built the DIY ones

Hope this helps!

I envy your setup, BoomR! It's amazing. I would like to build a Hack to run PT 10, Logic 9, and Reason 6.5 (I love to play w/Reason). I am planning on using 10.6.8 because I'd rather not step up to Lion unless it absolutely necessary.

I am thinking about duplicating your build but had some Qs.

1) I assume the case is more a matter of preference? I personally like the look of this one: http://www.corsair.com/en/pc-cases/...bsidian-series-550d-mid-tower-quiet-case.html.

2) Is there stuff here's that's not absolutely essential? I am hoping to start with a relatively bare-bones system that I can augment over time. So i don't need, say, the graphics card on day 1, that'd be great.

3) Since your mobo is discontinued, do you think that running a Digi 002R through the Firewire PCIe would be OK (assuming the Firewire card has the TI chipset)? I never saw that totally spelled out and was curious.

Thanks so much man. You rock.

Yes - most definitely! I got my case at MicroCenter here in Dallas. They had a wide selection of cases in stock. It was very helpful to be able to check them out in person. I felt the construction of the case I bought was a bit "beefier" than others they had on display. Having said all that, I'm actually thinking about putting the guts of my system into a G5 case :)

As long as your monitor uses one of the video connections on your mobo (either DVI or HDMI), then you're correct: a video card would not be required initially. Personally, my experience over the years is that the top DAW apps are very video processor intensive. If you're losing horsepower, or have artifacts on your display if you're doing a big mix or recording lots of simultaneous tracks, then you may want to add a dedicated graphics card. As for me, I have a 27" Cinema Display which requires a mini-display port, so a card that had this sort of connection was a requirement for me.

Most definitely - many of us have been having pretty good luck with the Syba card (just do a search of the forum for info on the card). Thelostsweed also has a post on a StarTech PCIe FW card that uses the same chipset that Apple is using on the most recent gen of MacBook Pros that still have the FW800 port.

Good luck on your build!! :headbang:

Boom.. Wicked set up! Nicely done! Definitely noted OSX Lion (not ML yet)...

Have you recorded anything via firewire interface through the syba pci card? I know you have that beast apogee card, just curious if you tried through the syba and if it's decent enough for basic recording / tracking... I have a motu 8pre at home and I'm getting ready for some tracking / sampling

Thanks man!

Thanks for the kudos, man!

I've not slammed the Syba card with a bunch of simultaneous tracks of record & play - I've only used it for "scratchpad" recording of stereo piano + simultaneous vocal. When I do this sort of thing, I use the Mackie Onyx 1220i FireWire mixer hooked up to the Syba card. Because it's both a FW audio interface AND a mixer, it's got a near-zero latency monitoring mode. Logic 9.x didn't break a sweat using the Mackie & the Syba card.

I'm a big fan of MOTU gear - I had one of the 1st gen 2408 w/PCI cards ages ago. Also had a first gen 896, too. Good solid gear built like a brick $*^thouse. I'd suggest booting up CueMix & monitoring through the CueMix application. I believe CM offer a "near zero latency" monitoring mode (that would be vs. monitoring audio thru in Logic).

Hope this helps!
