I got several drives in my Hackintosh:
2 SSDs (1 for OSX, 1 for Win 8)
and three HDDs.
Now I wanted to formate the HDDs via the ExFat format in order to use them both in Win and OSX. Unfortunately the ExFat disks are only recognized in OSX, so I have no possibilities to access data like my fotos and movies in my Win installation. The ExFat format is supposed to work under both operating systems. Anyone got a clue how to fix this?

Windows 8 only recognizes exFAT if on removable drives. It was originally designed for USB flash drives to allow for large file transfers between computers. You might find this interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT
If what I am reading on the Windows forums is true for Windows 8, then Win8 explorer won't see it if it is not connected USB. Not sure about eSATA yet, haven't seen anything on it.

Thanks a lot for the info. However, do you know a format which I can use to access a disk from both Win and OSX? If i format a disk in FAT32, Win can read and write and OSX can only read.

OS X should write on a FAT32 drive too, i know that it doesn't write on NTFS

My bad, you are right. I remember having problems with FAT32, but those were related to file sizes.
So to correct my question: Is there a way to format my disk to be able to share file sizes bigger than 4 GB?
I do a lot of video edditing with my GoPro and my DSLR where the size quickly exeeds 4 GB. Still I want to be able to access those files from both operating systems.

"Upgrade" back to W7 ;)

Have you tried setting your ExFat hard drives to "HotPlug" in your bios? In ML they show up as orange drives (i.e. external), so maybe Windows 8 will also recognise them as USB devices.

... really reviving an old thread here, but here's' another data point to consider: I have an exFAT partition to share between OS X and Windows. And I don't have any trouble accessing it from my Win8 install, OS X, or for that matter, my Win7 install... (and the drive is not hotswap).

Using local drive with ExFAT format in Windows 8 is very easy
1. Login to Windows 8
2. Run console as administrator
3. Input command: "sc config exfat start= demand"
4. Restart windows and enjoy!

I did this and I still cannot boot - the drive is GPT and everything and I cannot for the life of me figure it out.
