Powermac G3 Revamp

I've got an old Blue and White G3 that I'd love to revive in all it slightly tacky glory. (I don't have the then matching CRT monitor unfortunately)

I'm following this thread, wishing you success. Keep us informed of your progress.
 
Powermac G4 Revamp

Good news!

Power supply finally arrived from Amazon!

Fitted my custom motherboard tray (if you can call it that) to the case, making sure to take into consideration the graphics card ports lining up correctly.

Power supply cables are very short though! SATA for the hardrive is fine, but definitely need to invest in some extension cables for the motherboard 24 pin and the 4 pin cpu power cable. At the moment I have to plug the 4 pin power cable in just before i close the case, and same with the 24 pin.

You can see from the photos, I've had to unplug it, and this is as far as the case will open with the 24 pin cable in the motherboard...

Also, waiting on yet another order... (this time from eBay - China) for the cables for the front panel, which when it arrives, I'll hotwire the original power switch board...thingy..

Until then, my temporary method includes another stolen part from that "good-old" Packard Bell desktop

Powermac G4 Revamp Back of the Case

Was considering using the motherboards I/O plate, but cooling on this case isn't the best, so I've decided to leave the back open for better airflow. Loosing the audio ports doesn't bother me as I have USB external audio interface. All USB easily accesible, tried with many sized usb devices and they can fit in all the ports fine (even the ones close to my terribad cutting :p )

Had to trim the little plastic notches around the power supply. In the photo below, you can see my quick cut on the plastic notches so the plug can actually be plugged in. Barely noticeable and you probably wouldn't of noticed unless I pointed it out!

A bit unhappy I had to do it, but case still looks very stock.

And yes, I've lost the HDMI port behind some of the case. But this is not important, as the 9800 GT does not support HDMI connections (black screen bug) So once again, haven't really lost out, which is good!

Also if you're wandering why that screw is poking out of the right hand side, thats my way of securing the graphics card in place, as the official screws weren't long enough, so I just grabbed any old screw and it holds it nice and tightly.

Powermac G4 Revamp Case Overall

Well after a long, and patient mod, it's finally complete! .... well up and running..

I'm very happy with how it's come out. The stock look was what I was really going for and apart from a few minor things on the back, it's looking good. (No one will see the back anyway)

Temperatures aren't that bad! I haven't used the fan slot underneath the powersupply yet as I don't have a spare fan. Although I am planning on sticking a Corsair H60 CPU cooler's radiator there, to keep the temps and noise level down.

Also planning on using the front CD drive bay as a card reader with a USB port, to save having to feel around the back of the case just to plug a memory stick in.

Heres a few pictures of the case, and it up and running. Quick SMBIOS edit to get the right picture for it :) (very happy with that).

Thanks, I looked at yours a lot during the build, you may call your soldering work crappy, but it's the exact close up image I needed to see what I need to do when the power cables I ordered arrive.


On another note, anyone know a low profile quiet cpu cooler?

I was thinking of the Corsair H60 Watercooler, or would the noise be more than the stock intel fan?

I wanted to advise, that when you get ready to do the soldering for the power LED, I had to solder to one of the outer leads for the LED, then solder to the inner lead for the other connection before I could get it to work. remember to try flipping the connection if you don't get it to light up on the first try. that's what got me, had me thinking I had a bad LED.

Happened to me as well!

But instead of re-soldering it, I've been lazy and taken a working LED and placed it in the power button hole where the other one would usually go. Works a treat :)
 
Oh having the Apple logo as a HD activity is a good idea! I may have to steal that idea...

On a different note, after seeing at all the painted ones other people have modded around the forum, it has really tempted me to do the same.

Just have to pick a colour scheme first :)
