Bit confused about which DVD I need to build the hackingtosh. I see now you can't seem to buy the Snow Leopard from Apple stores & have been looking around at third parties.

For a fresh install I guess the upgrade disc will be of no use?

I think I need the full dvd but it's very hard to get specifics from the vendors - many don't know if it's upgrade or full disc.............nor do I!

What do I look for please?

I'm going to use one of the per-established safe builds from the lists on the site.

Thanks in advance.

Look for "Mac OS X Snow Leopard" with a green sticker say "New Version 10.6.3"

Amazon has copies of the DVD retail, but the sellers are asking too much money for a DVD which should not cost more than $30.00 USD. By the way, some seller state that it is an upgrade version; however, I don't see such a distinction on my SL box or documentation. So you should be OK if you can find the retail DVD for a reasonable price. A couple of months ago, an amazon seller was selling it for about $45 USD, but it seems now everyone is taking advantage of Apple shutting down the sales of the SL DVD retail. Good luck!

Cheers Orestesdd. I second that on the prices, they seem to be silly money now.

Have done some poking about on the net & came across this page that seems to answer the question - I bloomin' well hope I've understood it correctly as I've ordered a copy of the upgrade disc on info this seeing as there's not been any replies apart from yours which goes in with what your saying about being no determinable difference.

Here's hoping!

I'm really looking forward to doing this build as I'm all windows at the mo & just getting sick of forever tweeking & sorting problems out with syncing & stuff........I've heard the grass is greener....................

You can always look at my build to see when I started gathering all the parts. If I were you, I would not pay more than $60 USD for a legit copy of a retail SL DVD. I wish Apple would have not retired the retail SL DVD, which is creating this black market. Again, good luck, and I will keep an eye on your thread.

"upgrade disks" are actualy full versions of the OS. Apple doesn't sell just "upgrade disks".

It would be only a matter of hours when Apple discontinued selling them, those with disk would ask for premium prices with such huge demand.

eBay must be a crazy house now.

I'll definitely take a look at your build as I'm tempted to diverge a little where money permits like an i3 2125 3.3 GHz instead of the 2105. I've actually sourced a G5 case too that I'm tempted to buy! I'm a little fugged about the graphics at the mo though so will have to research that a little more as I read something about having to tweak some cards with some download from ........ nvidia I think it was........ which I didn't quite understand - will look into it though.

It's interesting to finally know that both discs are one and the same, upgrade/full. Just like windows discs now.

I ordered from a big company here in UK so hopefully they'll be able to fulfill the order unless they outsource & there's a delay in the stock updating? I do hope not as I'm chomping at the bit! As soon as the disc comes through I'm ordering the kit.

Cheers people, will keep you updated & when I start the build I'll shift over to the appropriate thread.

Guys, re Snow Leopard disk. I've found out that if you phone apple sales they're still selling them & shipping out at the mo, only if ordered via Phone though.

Over the phone? Interesting. I wonder if they also do it for our international brethren?
