Gigabyte Z690 Aero G + i5-12600K + AMD RX 6800 XT

@CaseySJ

First of all, I'd like to thank you for all the effort you have put into this build and in helping people getting it up and running. Maybe I'm a little late, but I now decided to use this build for my new hack and - of course - I wouldn't be writing here, if everything worked as I expected... I hope you can give me some advice.

So, first things first: Hardware
  • Gigabyte Z690 Aero G (DDR5 version though)
  • 2x16GB DDR5-6000 CL 36-36-36-36 Trident Z5 (RGB yuck); the case says "Intel XMP Ready", I don't know, if that matters somehow
  • Intel Core i5 12600K
  • WD Black 1TB .M2 (in the CPU-slot)
  • AMD RX 6600 XT (Gaming)
As I am using a RX 6600 XT, I am trying to install 12.6.3 macOS Monterey (21G419, currently latest).

First thing, I had to do a BIOS-update because the whole machine didn't even start into bios with this CPU und RAM. I thus updated to F22. I don't know if this still lacks the Thunderbolt settings, but I don't have a TB card and don't really care about those.

About BIOS and the settings you listed:
There was no option regarding BAR-support so I suppose, my RX 6600 XT does not support that.
Internal GPU is DISABLED.

My available old hackintosh machine, where I do all the edits, only runs on Mojave, so I cannot use HackinDROM for updates (not supported).

I used your prepared 0.8.3 EFI from post #1,779 and OpenCore Configurator for Version 0.8.3 in order to:
  1. generate new platform info (generic only, 'MacPro7,1', I tried 'MacPro1,1' but the installation then tells me that installing this version on that platform is not supported)
  2. rename my GPU and GPU audio (DeviceProperties)
  3. add '-v' to the boot-args (NVRAM)
  4. set Misc->Debug->Target to 67
  5. (left Misc->Security->SecureBootModel on 'Disabled')
As I am installing Monterey 12.6, I chose SSDT-UIAC-Z690-AERO-G-ALL-PORTS-HS14 and set the XhciPortLimit quirk.

Now, trying to install (USB 2.0 drive in one of the two USB 2 on the backside), installation stalls at "HID: Legacy shim 2" (s. attached picture).

And now I don't know how to continue and hope you can help me somehow...

I am attaching:
- photo of the stalled screen
- my config.plist
- some OC-log file that was generated automatically
- my DSTD dumped on Windows 10 (which runs fine from a seperate SSD)

Thanks in advance for your time and help. I really appreciate it!

Regards,
Jo
If you’ve tried all of your USB ports with your USB2 flash drive, you may want to try it again using a USB3 flash drive. Sometimes a powered hub can get you past this as well.
Good luck,
J

Hello @sodom76,

Several questions and comments:
  • Were you able to configure all BIOS parameters listed in Post 1, STEP 6 with the exception of Resizable BAR?
  • The option for Resizeable BAR should be present in all versions of BIOS. Have you checked the BIOS screenshots in Post 1, STEP 6?
  • Are you able to install BIOS F8?
  • In the attached config.plist I have enabled SecureBootModel, but removed your serial numbers
    • A couple of other small changes have also been made
  • Please backup your existing config.plist, download the attached version, copy serial numbers into PlatformInfo -> DataHub and save the file
  • You may see a number of OCS Schema warnings with this version of config.plist because it's formatted for OpenCore 0.9.0, but those warnings may be ignored
Let's see if the installer gets any further with this.

Thank you for the suggestion, but neither USB port nor using an USB 3 drive did change anything.

Ok, somehow I feel a little stupid now. I seem to have missed activating the cores. I've now activated all of them and hyperthreading is enabled, too (didn't miss this before).

The BIOS screenshots in post 1 seem not to be in sync with the textual description, i.e. there is no word about "Legacy USB support" being disabled (as in the screenshots, it is enabled by default... it's also not highlighted so probably it isn't important.).

But aside from "Resize BAR Support" and the Thunderbolt settings, I was able to set all other properties as told.
...hmm. I wonder... in my BIOS there is another option in the place of the BAR Support setting, it is called "Above 4GB MMIO BIOS assignment". Maybe they just renamed it, or is it something totally different?
However, that option is DISABLED.

Regarding BIOS F8, I'll look into it. I'd rather have my machine boot with its current BIOS, but I will of course downgrade it, if nothing helps.

So I'd like to use that config.plist file ... which you obviously forgot to attach ^^

Also, just keep the serials in there, I don't intend to use them in the final installation, they were just the initial values after selecting the model and I don't even know, if they are in use or not (I get a valid answer for the serial on the everymac-site, though).

So, while waiting for your modified config.plist, I'm setting the security model to "j160" and ResizeAppleGpuBars to -1 and see, what happens.

I can't seem to downgrade to F8, because I cannot download it.

F6 maybe?

Edit: Or, if you still have a copy of it, maybe you can provide it to me?

Edit 2: No, don't. I found it on the support page for the DDR-4 version of the mainboard. My board might not support it and I don't want to break it. But taking a look at the date of DDR4-F8 and DDR5-F6, they were released on the same day.

The two modifications did something but it didn't help much. Now I'm stuck a couple of lines lower (s. attachment).

config.plist attached this time!

So the DDR5 version of Aero G does not have F8 BIOS, so we should use the F6 BIOS instead.

Still doesn't come up. I currently using the USB 3 drive and it seems to depend on the port I am using where it will get stuck. When I am using one of the four blue ports (I think there's a hub behind those), it'll be stuck at "AppleFileSystemDriver: using boot-uuid" and using the red 3.2 port (above the BIOS one), it'll stall at "HID: Legacy shim 2".

I'll get the F6 BIOS, downgrade and reapply the settings from post #1. Should I then retry with the original config-plist from your 0.8.3-EFI or the one you just attached?

Okay, so I downgraded to F6, re-started with your 0.8.3-EFI and modified config.plist myself. I have the impression, we're a little better now, as ... the Recovery Assistant started up?! Not the installer?

It is currently examining my volumes but there's nothing to be found I guess... what now?

Oh, using the red USB 3.2 seemed to start up the installer... I'll try to install now and come back here.
