Asus Z690 ProArt Creator WiFi (Thunderbolt 4) + i7-12700K + AMD RX 6800 XT

Has anyone else had problems with a USB keyboard no longer being recognised at the OpenCore Boot Screen? I've made no OS or OpenCore changes and the hardware is the same, but randomly the keyboard stops working at this point. If I unplug the keyboard and put it into a different USB port things start working. Once the machine has booted I have no problems.

I'm using Mac OS 13.2.1 and OpenCore 0.8.9. The keyboard is an Apple extended model, the aluminium one with the white keys.
I got burned with Asus in 2007 so I quit them until z690. Only because Gigabyte QA was bad with z590. But dealing with Asus technical support is just as terrible as it was back in 2007.

I reported the Thunderbolt issue with 2204 to them in Dec 2022, they responded that Thunderbolt is fine. They sent me two boards and installed the 2204 BIOS (with the problematic NVM) on both. They were saying there is no Thunderbolt issue.

It’s not until I made a video was when they realized the problem, and then spun 9901. They didn’t even tell me that 9901 downgraded the firmware. In fact they were telling me that it is impossible to downgrade the firmware from NvM36 which we now know it is indeed possible.

I think now Intel Thunderbolt is involved and apparently there’s a new NVM41 for Maple Ridge. I haven’t tried that.

All I can do is shake my head in disbelief at the issues with so many of these PC companies. And hope they get better. Say what you want about Apple, it surely isn’t perfect, but my M1 Max has never had any of these issues with Thunderbolt.

I'm surprised there's no warning on the Asus website about not being able to downgrade the BIOS from this latest version. Until now, the downgrade process (minus the NVM) had been painless. Maybe that's how it's been with them, this is my first Asus board in over 15 years.
oh no.. i just updated the bios to 2305, XMP II works great! but my thunderbolt firmware was updated and thunderbolt 2 device no longer is recognized... so i can't revert ?? :banghead:

Has anyone tried the new 24GB and 48GB DIMMs on their Z790 boards? These are "high capacity" DIMMs. We're familiar with:
  • 16GB DIMMs
  • 32GB DIMMs
But now these are available (or soon to be available):
  • 24GB DIMMs
  • 48GB DIMMs
This means:
  • 48GB with 2x24GB DIMMs (instead of 32GB)
  • 192GB with 4x48GB DIMMs (instead of 128GB max)

Can confirm: 9901 downgrades the buggy Z690 nvm36 back to nvm31. And unlike beta BIOS 2301 and 2303, there is no regression lock, so you can downgrade back to 2103.

And smooth sailing with XMP on. Only issue is no hot plug of JHL6240 devices. They must be connected before cold boot. But that is a small price to pay.
Can BIOS 9901 be applied when a regression-locked BIOS is installed?

Guys just wanted to give you a heads up might not be for Z690 but on Z790 with the latest BIOS looks like Asus did something that causes the system to lockup, constant kernel panics, constant finder crushes, went back to version lower and its all smooth sailing (except sleep). Just wanted to warn you to be careful.

On the AMD AM5 platform some of us are running beta BIOS 1003 successfully with Ventura on Asus X670E Hero. This BIOS supports high-density memory (24GB and 48GB modules), but also updates on-board Maple Ridge to NVM 38. We are still checking whether this supports TB1 and TB2.

Attempted flash with 9901 and 2013

Selected file is not a proper BIOS!
I wonder if this will work:
  • Connect a Thunderbolt 3 dock to the computer's Thunderbolt port
  • Connect your TB1 or TB2 device to the dock

Hi, @CaseySJ! I just tried a Razer Thunderbolt 4 dock with a Thunderbolt 2 Ethernet and a Thunderbolt 2 Firewire on Hackintosh and Win 11 with NVM36. Nothing at all is showing up, So no chance of Tthunderbolt 1 and 2 devices working?
