MSI PRO Z690 A DDR4 + i7-12700K + AMD RX 580

Hi all.
I've critical trouble when I tried to update Ventura from 13.2.1 to 13.3 beta.
Look's like some serious changes in macOS kernel, installer hangs at start. Somebody can install this update with HT off (or E-cores off) - on my mobo this doesn't help: Installer works longer, but goes to reboot without any changes. :banghead:
We have to wait new kexts from devs, I think. :beachball:

Oh no! Thanks for the heads up. Wanna try the newest OC Beta?

@trs96, you're the M.2 man, so I figured i'd report some interesting findings on the Samsung 980 Pro 2TB.

With the 980 Pro on the board, your disk speeds post boot are abysmal. I'm talking 10Mb/s. Eventually it will pick back up to 4500/5000 speeds but will randomly drop.

When booting from another M.2 (Samsung X5, not sure what drive that actually is) with the 980 Pro still installed on the motherboard I also get abysmal performance.

If I pull the 980, I get my normal performance from the X5 (2300/3000).

With the 980 Pro in a USB-C enclosure my X5 behaves normally and 980 has steady speeds for storage.

With the 980 Pro in a USB-C enclosure with macOS installed and booted the speeds return to the (overused word) abysmal.

So this is now my portable 2TB drive I guess. @CaseySJ can you make sense of any of this?

Edited for spelling abysmal insanely wrong

It’s odd that just having the 980 installed in a M.2 slot would affect performance of a different SSD.

Putting the 980 into a USB-C enclosure takes it off the PCIe bus and places it on the USB bus. Maybe this is enough to circumvent whatever problem is affecting the M.2 slot.

Do all SSDs perform normally when a different brand of NVMe SSD is installed in the same M.2 slot? Maybe the slot itself is damaged…

P.S. Abysmal, not abismall:)

Thats embarrassing :)

All the drives have normal performance in any given slot. It could be the mix of Gen3 and Gen4? Possibly NVMEfix? I wish I had more time to dive in.

It's worth mentioning that I have every m.2 slot filled on top of every PCIe slot.

UPDATE 1: Running macOS from the 980 over USB seems to be steadier (not quite) with Third Party Drives enabled in OC.

UPDATE 2: Doh, I was running the drive over thunderbolt. Attempting actual USB next.

UPDATE 3: Still bad. Returning it. Thanks for playing.

A quick note on the MSI Bios. I've tried a few updated versions and so far the best one is the very first edition (7D25v10). The newest one is just awful.

What I like about it? It's the fastest, most settings you need (Secure Boot Disabled, Resizable Bar Disabled) are already set. You just need to disable CFG Lock (OC Settings > CPU Features) and set Intel Speed Shift to ENABLED (OC Settings > Advanced CPU).

One added bonus here is that the Thunderbolt settings have zero features. Its just on and works. So grab your GC-Titan 2.0, flash it, bridge pins 3 and 5 and enjoy.

I have two systems on two disks: stable Ventura and beta.
Good news from OC team:

### v0.9.0
- Resolved issues with verbose boot log appearing over picker graphics
- Added version number to EnableGop UI section, so tool builders can track it
- Added `ProvideCurrentCpuInfo` support for macOS 13.3 DP

UPD: 13.3 beta installed.

@CaseySJ I did a little more testing with the 980 today and came to some conclusions. I put it on an OWC Accelsior 1m2, and it gave me 1000/1000mb in a x1 slot. No issues with other drives. I then moved it to a x4 slot and got 3000/3000mb with no issues on other drives.

My thought here is that I simply ran out of headroom on the board with 4 M.2 drives. I'd imagine if the 980 was the only drive on the board it would run full speed and just fine. That or I could restrict Gen 4 in bios and maybe run all four drives.

Either way, good to know! Now the big bummer, not enough slots to run my GC Titan.

Update: Its strange though. It takes about 5 minutes before getting up to speed. My best guess is thats becasue of no TRIM.

Update 2: Setting Trim to 1 in OC solves it. Cant recommend but still...trying as the only drive in the system tomorrow morning.
