Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

It is a matter of the workload that is put at the GPU, not the GPU itself.
Yes, Redshift is pretty intensive, but I am not doing Hollywood productions so the chance of going dual GPU are slim. Just a consideration. It comes down to the all mighty dollar I suppose and what you can get for it. I just heard back from a parts store that they would match a price on a Aorus Master for $160 (Canadian). It doesn't have Thunderbolt, but the price is amazing for a new motherboard. I have no Thunderbolt devices at the moment anyhow.. If I do require it, I can just use my Vision D system or add that Titan Ridge card. Hmmm.. Just to modernize my Ivy Bridge, this might be a good cheap solution. Really wish I could find another Vision D... it is a nice sweet spot... really uncomfortable going on ebay for components, vendors seem sketchy in their "open box, only used to test" descriptions. You look at the images and they are covered in dust and hair and have obviously stains and cuts on the motherboard. I really appreciate the conversation and input.

Hi all and @CaseySJ
I randomly get panic when booting from my EFI which has always been 100% fine in the past (screen attached).
What should I suspect is (starting?) going wrong?
Thanks for your help!

Hello @MacArthur

The source of the kernel panic is most likely mentioned in the page or two before the screenshot you posted. If we take a video of the boot logs, we can scrub to the 2nd or 3rd frame from the end. Those frames are more helpful.

I have been using this installation for couple years!

But suddenly today macOS Big Sur 11.7 started freezing. After 5 minutes after boot it stutters every 1-5 secs for around 5-10 minutes and then freezes completely.

Is there a way to resolve it?

If you have issues see if adding these settings to your build helps:

RestrictEvents.kext
NVMeFix.kext
AppleMCEReporterDisabler.kext

Kernel > Quirks > DisableLinkedItJettison
DisableRtcChecksum

Some questions:
  • Were any new applications or hardware components installed recently?
  • If you have Windows or Linux on this system, do they also crash after a few minutes?
  • If you boot macOS in safe mode (hold shift key down when selecting macOS disk in OpenCore boot picker), does it still crash?
  • Does macOS only crash if a particular application is running, or it crashes regardless of which apps are running?

Thanks! I'll check those, but the main problem seems to be related to GPU, please see below

Some questions:

  • Were any new applications or hardware components installed recently?
Yes, it's hard to track which ones.
  • If you have Windows or Linux on this system, do they also crash after a few minutes?
Nope, I have Windows it works perfectly
  • If you boot macOS in safe mode (hold shift key down when selecting macOS disk in OpenCore boot picker), does it still crash?
If I boot macOS into another fresh user it won't crash! Now I suspect it's some kind of startup process related to the main user. But I checked ~/Library/LaunchAgents and removed everything, it still crashes
  • Does macOS only crash if a particular application is running, or it crashes regardless of which apps are running?
It crashes after a while no matter what's running and seems to be related to GPU access. I get the "virtual void IOAccelEventMachineFast2::checkGPUProgress() - Signaling hardware error on channel 18..." errors in the Console Log.

BTW I have AMD RX 6800 XT. Thanks for your help!

If it is the GPU check if you have done the following:

1) Removed the device properties for the previous GPU under PCIRoot device tree and boot-arg
2) Entered the following info for the RX6800XT under boot-arg - agdpmod=pikera
3) Added the below device settings:

4) Added the following Intel IGPU settings for the i9-10900K:

If it is the GPU check if you have done the following:

Thanks! I tried that and hackintosh froze on the Apple logo.

Then I noticed photoanalysisd consuming high CPU and after that GPU error messages appear in log. So I moved my iPhoto library and freezes now gone!

Seems photoanalysisd (and mediaanalysisd) are the causes of the freezes. This is really weird - they were working before. Do you guys know how to switch them off completely? I tried "launchctl unload -w..." but they come back!

That may be a BIOS related issue. Have you checked if Above 4G Decoding and/or ResizeableBar has been enabled?
