Good night my friends of the TonyMac family. I would like help to know if it is possible to update my desktop, which currently runs an El Capitan, so that I can update my OS and my software. What should I change from my current hardware setup? Would just the video card be enough?
My current configuration is:
Gigabyte Z77X-UP5-TH motherboard
Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i732 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
No graphic card at the moment.
Thanks.

Your profile indicates that you have a GT 640. Did you remove it from your system?

The HD 4000 CPU integrated graphics in your CPU and the GT 640 are both no longer supported on MacOS Monterey and later. So if you want to run Monterey or the upcoming Ventura, the least you need to do is to get a supported graphics card like the RX 560 / RX 570 / RX 580 (second hand only) or the current RX 6600 / RX 6800 / RX 6900. Of course the current RX 6000 series are much more expensive.

RX 6600 are not that expensive now, but @AndreStudio would essentially need a whole new system to run Monterey—at which point an AppleSilicon Mac should be considered.
Rather the question may be: To which OS could he upgrade on his current hardware?
GT640 (which may no longer be used) works up to Big Sur.

Thank you for your help. My GT 640 stopped working and I removed it.
I found this AFOX / Radeon RX 580 8GB GDDR5 (AFRX580-8192D5H2-V2) and this Sapphire 11310-01-20G Pulse AMD Radeon RX 6600 Gaming Graphics Card with 8GB GDDR6, AMD RDNA 2.
Are they compatible with my motherboard? Would you recommend any of these to me?

Hi, I really need to update my OS to at least 11.5 because I need to update my Logic Pro X.
My GT640 stopped working.

Both of those cards are quite good and the RX580 should also allow you to use Catalina or Big Sur. The RX6600 however only works with Monterey onwards.

If you don't want to spend much money — and it looks like you didn't mind staying with the same OS for seven years (El Capitan ;) ) — your HD4000 is an option too, provided you apply a patch to use it with Monterey.
There's a number of threads mentioning that:

I'm still on Mojave but planning myself to do so in the future.
As it's very likely such a patch won't exist for Ventura, it means that we'll have to stay on Monterey, but I guess that when the time comes to update again, there'll be no more MacOS running on Intel anyway...
I'm currently using a patch from the same author (chris1111) for running Mojave with my GT210, so I'm confident the HD4000 patch runs ok.

EDIT: here's where you'll find the patch

HD4000 still has support in Big Sur so 11.5 is an option without the need for any patching. That is the simplest, lowest cost way to go right now.
