Edhawk 's hp microserver gen8 guide has always been one of my favorites. However, there was an unusual issue with the HP microserver Gen10: it couldn't start without a display. When I unplug the display, the machine does not boot (since when the machine begins successfully, it immediately joins the file sharing); in contrast, when I connect to any monitor (even without turning on the display), the computer starts up normally. What might be the cause of this problem? thanks.

you may want to try again:

Hi, I've updated it once more. Although the AMD APU incorporates an IGPU, it does not support MacOS's graphical acceleration, hence the IGPU does not function correctly. This is the reason I didn't write it before. In accordance with your specifications, I included it. Thanks for reminding me.

Use a 2K Dummy/Ghost DisplayPort adapter. That way the system thinks a screen is attached but you only need to have the virtual adapter attached.

Exactly that.

Out of curiosity. Why would you want to install MacOs on the microserver? (TimeMachine, Fileserver?)

I use mine as NFS,Samba, Transcoding (Quadro P400), Docker, VM, Wireguard and a lot more things.
At one point I used it for TimeMachine, but I felt it was too finicky.

I'm only using it as a file server (SMB). Its AMD processor isn't particularly powerful, but it has decent electrical performance, especially when it comes to PSU and the physical disk mount. If you're simply using the command line, you don't even need a dedicated graphics card.

I have one of my HP Microserver Gen8 (Intel 6-Series) running Catalina and use it for backups, clones, TimeMachine and as a File server. It is a low power system that runs headless, single low profile PCIe GPU (Quadro K600) for macOS compatibility, 3 x 3TB WD Red drives, 1 x 120GB SSD for OS, Optical Disk (low profile). Works with USB3 to Ethernet adapter, as the dual Broadcom Ethernet ports lack a compatible macOS driver.

The other Gen8 Microserver runs MS Server 2012 R2 Essentials, for my old business needs. In a year I can repurpose the drives, as the 6-year time limit on retaining files will expire.

Neither will win any races if put up against a newer system, but they serve their purpose consistently and to date without any issues.
