News reports that Windows PC makers are very concerned about Apple's new MB Air, that it will drastically affect their sales figures

I think they should be worried, I'm planning on keeping my M1 MBA in good working condition for as long as possible!. Ive owned it for over a year and the battery life is still good usually 3 - 4 days between charging. The keyboard feels amazingly light and responsive, doesn't sound 'clattery', I also like the big trackpad my big hands don't feel restricted. There are a lot of good things to say about the Apple silicon Airs, I can't really think of anything that I would want to replace it with.

At risk of being a pill, I'll note the same writeup has PC makers worried that a horrible economy for ordinary people (let's take stock war, with nuclear possibilities, insane inflation, overt oblivious classist political graft and corruption, successive waves of a world-wide pandemic, urban strife, and a climate asteroid of jurassic proportions headed directly for Earth) are also weighing on PC forecasts.

The PC industry is still the PC industry. Look at their stupid ads: they have 80% of everything and they're just watching the tides. The innovation of PC has never been lower. Apple's disruption of the PC market already occurred with the phone, but the PC lives on! Raptor Lake — who cares if no one needs Office to run faster. I have to work to keep in mind that each Intel generation step has implications for an enormous swath of products, far beyond whatever model of device was last said to be sexy.

In context The M2 is a blip, even within Apple. An incremental advance in a mobile trend-line with a now fully established trajectory. Sure it's a safe buy...

The AR/VR stuff could be the next wave.

My question for the forums is about the architecture balancing act: let's say there's going to be an AR breakthrough and all this M-kit has been arranged with the right balance of powers for creating in this new world?

Idk but looking ahead.

Yup I agree, you have a point there. It's been suggested that Apple Glass is their next move. The MB Air in this new generation has tackled things on three fronts - performance, efficiency and battery life, making it viable for such a project to happen. If Apple Glass is expected to be an enclosed and portable design like the Meta Quest 2 for instance that would open a whole new level (and market) for AR/VR. In some ways I'm still surprised that not enough laptop makers have put that (VR compatibility) into consideration as a standard across all PCs/laptops being made today. I know at least one PC manufacturer has tried this route and that was Acer a few years ago on their laptop range.

Order your upgraded M2 MBA today and it takes 5-6 weeks to get it shipped to your home. Not available in store.
This price is for 16GB of ram and a 1TB SSD. Reasonable choices if you want to keep it 7-8 years.

This laptop will cost over 2 grand when you add sales tax for most states in the USA.

A much better choice than M2 MacBook Pro.

I would opt for the base model M1 Pro MBP upgraded to 1TB NVMe over an M2 MBA that costs over two grand.
Better display, more ports, better cooling etc.

Why go for the M1 pro?, the only difference between an M1 pro and Air is a fan!.

Not the 13" M1 MacBook Pro. I'm talking about the 2021 14" redesigned MBP with mini-LED and ProMotion, the older one (13") didn't get a redesign. The 14" M1 Pro MBP has dual fans, better heat pipes etc. Look at some reviews on Youtube. Better all around than the Air or the M1/M2 MBP that uses the older chassis from 2016.

I'm not a fan of the redesign, I would rather keep the 'Wedge' M1 Air, it doesn't have any fans, fan = noise, two fans + Intel = Lots of noise. No thanks!.
