pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

My quest for fast, reliable external storage...

Next I decided to give the USB3 connection a shot. Performance was fine and it maintained approx 130-160mb/s throughout a large transfer. Unfortunately, the drives would disconnect when the Mac Studio went to sleep and resulted in, at times, dozens of "Did not eject properly" notifications. I tried all sorts of suggestions found on the internet including purchasing an app called Jettison. None of the fixes worked 100%...

I picked up a used iMac 8/256 for $800, so I thought I'd jump (back) on the M1 train and give it a shot; if I don't like it I suspect I can sell it for about what I paid. Mine is the lowest end, with only 2 USB4/TB4 ports. I'm looking at options for external storage, and not liking much of what I see. It seems to me I can spend $44, get a iMac backpack from Amazon (a storage shelf to put things) and then put a USB4/TB4 (or just USBC 3.2) drive there, or I can spend $150 and get something like this: https://satechi.net/products/usb-c-slim-dock-for-24-imac?variant=39942903496792, which would give me 2 USB2, 1 USB3, and the NVME drive capability (albeit at 1050MB/s).

But you've had issues with disk disconnect/reconnect during sleep. That's troubling.

Do you think it's universal across all USB devices on the Mac? Or is it just yours? Or is it just USB3.0 USBA ports? What, exactly, are you (were you) hooking up?

Currently I'm limping along with a rather ugly USBC->USB3.0x4 hub with HDMI output, and the HDMI output is driving a 32" 2540x1440 screen, the Logi USB receiver, a USB3 (usb a) external SSD in a cheap enclosure, and the USB3->Lightning cables for charging things; it works, but it's a bit ugly and cabling is a mess. And I need to test sleep behavior more (but so far no errors on wakeup).

I was using a Sans Digital MS4UT which has USB3 and eSATA. It's like the following but in silver...

I first used it with a USB 3.1 gen1 type-B to type-C cable.

As I said, it worked... I just kept getting the "Did not eject properly" notifications on wake. I don't know if it happens to all USB drives, but my guess is yes.

Thunderbolt enclosures may not have this problem. I don't know. I don't have a Thunderbolt enclosure to test.

For USB hub, my monitor stand (Dell MKS14) is my hub and it has worked wonderfully for years. I started using it with my hackintoshes and continue to use it with my Mac Studio. It has four USB 3.1 gen 1 ports, Ethernet, and an SD card reader.

I'm also impressed that you actually managed to push the Mac Studio to this level. So how many decimal-points did you work PI to?

And did the Mac Studio even get a little warmer than ambient?

:D

This was from playing God of War III in the PS3 emulator, RPCS3. It's probably the most demanding game for that emulator.

Temps barely moved (below temps are in Fahrenheit) and fans never swayed from the default ~1330rpm. I've never seen the fans go any higher nor have I ever heard the fans.
