[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

@danielurdea

If the boot process stalls at the Apple logo, please check if “CFG-Lock” is disabled in BIOS (it needs to be disabled).

You can also press and release CMD-V in OpenCore boot picker to enable Verbose mode. Then select the macOS boot disk and see where the log messages stop.

Yes, CFG-Locck was the the culprit, thank you man, you are awesome! Now I have working USB3 ports and wifi and bluetoth as bonus.

** Quick Note on macOS 13: Ventura **

Apple intends to release a public beta of Ventura next month. As soon as it's available, I'll post a mini-guide explaining (a) OpenCore configuration, (b) installation options, and (c) what works and what does not work. Meanwhile, consider upgrading to latest version of macOS Big Sur or Monterey if you are still on Mojave or Catalina. And latest version of OpenCore (0.8.1).

Hello!
Ventura is coming, so I think it's probably a good time to update my build to Monterey. LOL
I checked post #1 and couldn't find any micro/mini-guide specific on updating to Monterey (form BigSur).

Does that mean that all I need to do is to
- Update OpenCore (to the latest? Currently on 0.7.4)
- Going through regular software updates on the system?

Hello @phrfpeixoto,

Because you're on Big Sur and OpenCore, you are in a good position. The process is:
  • Make a full bootable backup of Big Sur (including the EFI partition). Trust me, you don't want to skip this step!
  • Then upgrade to OpenCore 0.7.8 or newer.
  • Finally perform an in-place upgrade from Big Sur to Monterey from System Preferences --> Software Update.

Ok i will flash it. Fingers crossed
@synnys , were you able to solve your problem with MOTU drivers not loading for your audio interface in Big Sur?

I am upgrading from Catalina to Monterey and have the same problem.

Many thanks for any help.

Perfectly normal. Unless we flash the Thunderbolt firmware with an external CH341a SPI ROM reader/writer, this will always say “No drivers are loaded”. Simply ignore that. Connect a Thunderbolt device and see if it actually works.
Hi @CaseySJ. Is this the reason why my Thunderbolt 3 ports recognize any USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices on Mac OS and also on Windows and on BIOS? If so, how I can change from Thunderbolt 3 to USB recognition mode? Because I need usb 3.0 devices to be recognized on Thunderbolt 3 ports more than Thunderbolt devices. If need to choose I prefer usb device recognition over Thunderbolt devices.

For those having the same problem in the future: I have been able to run MOTU 16A over a not flashed Titan Ridge thunderbolt PCIe card in Monterey 12.4, disabling SIP and enabling Apple VTD (Opencore 0.8.1)

I attach a copy of my config.plist (SMBIOS data removed), perhaps it will help somebody.

Many thanks @CaseySJ and @synnys !!

Do you mean to say that your Thunderbolt 3 ports do not recognize USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices? Some comments:
  • We should use BIOS F9g or F9i
  • We should avoid BIOS F9j and F9
  • USB 2.0 devices have intentionally been disabled from the two Thunderbolt 3 ports in order to maintain 15 port limit in macOS
  • USB 3.0 devices should connect and work without any problem on both Thunderbolt 3 ports (but do not use BIOS F9j or F9)

Hi @CaseySJ. I was F9 before I decided to go with Mac OS. So it is not possible to revert it as you know. My problem is not Mac OS specific and I don't care USB 2.0 too much. But I really need USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 3.2 Type C devices to work on Thunderbolt 3 port (To boot from an external drive on Mac OS, to use as extra storage on windows). I set "Thunderbolt Usb Support" as enabled on BIOS but either in BIOS or in Windows-Mac OS it just does not work. I can't use my type C external drives anywhere if they are connected on Thunderbolt ports.

Do you know the reason and the solution? How could Gigabyte kill USB support on Thunderbolt 3 ports with BIOS update? If the reason is just the BIOS update, it is unacceptable if GIGABYTE limited the Thunderbolt ports to be used by only Thunderbolt devices.
