What id like to see is a new Macbook pro with at least 16gb of ram preferably 32gb, 1TB+ ssd, same with a mac mini or similar machine. but im not to fussed if they dont do this until the 3rd release of the M line SOC, as I got badly burnt with my first gen powerpc mac mini, it was the most unreliable computer ive ever owned. so ive learnt dont ever buy 1st gen Apple kit, not until its at least 2nd gen.

im wanting to go all Apple silicon, but whilst theres no decently priced 32gb minimum option, ill stick with my hack desktop and 2017 intel macbook pro. I use these machines mostly for photoshop and illustrator, some coding. so they are memory intensive tasks. Im also keen to see if they ever put out a mini mac pro or similar midsize offering, or a souped up mac mini.

Most all leaks and rumors coming out lately say that 16GB of ram will be included in the base model and there will be an option to configure the M1X SoC up to 32GB for a few hundred dollars more. Graphics core upgrades should also be an option. You'll be able to get a very powerful laptop but it will be well over 2,000 USD.

Hacks are always the best value, you'll get better hardware specs for your money. Do note though that 16GB of ram in an M1X MacBook Pro will act more like 24GB of ram on non-Apple hardware. Ram is used more efficiently and there is faster access to it in a new Late 2021 M1X MBP.

The two big advantages that a new MBP has over a hackintosh laptop are:

1. No configuration and update worries with a MBP. Hacking a laptop takes much time and effort to make it all work.
2. The Apple MBP retains it's value much better than any laptop designed to run Windows. You can always resell it and recover much of your investement.

The main advantage of most hackintosh laptops over a MBP is that you get to upgrade the ram and the NVMe SSD whenever you want to. Not only at the time of purchase. Upgrades cost a lot less too.

This is not true. At least not on the current M1. Went from 16GB Mac mini i7 to M1 Mac Mini base model. I use the same applications and the same amount of tabs open in a browser. Faster SSD helps with the huge almost 8GB swap file but I do have to restart the machine more often cause it will slow down and stutter over time especially when scrolling web pages.

How many tabs are you keeping open at one time ? Are you using Chrome or Safari ? Why not pay the extra money to get the 16GB M1 Mac mini ? It will save your SSD from wearing out prematurely.

I believed people that were writing on forums and claiming on youtube that 8GB on an Apple machine is the same as 16GB on Intel which is simply not true. Speed of RAM is important but the amount counts way more.

Ah my laptop isnt a hack its a genuine MBP 2017. Its only my desktop that is a hack. I dont like using a laptop as a daily driver, So i will be needing a mac desktop of some kind. This hack currently has 12tb of standard HDD's as well as the 2 256gb SSD. i need the HDD's for storing all my design resources for photoshop and illustrator, i also have a seperate SSD i use as a scratch disk for photoshop. I know it is possible to use a laptop connected to a larger screen in a stand or dock, but i still think the amount of use id be putting the machine through would shorten its life. and id hate to have a load of hard drives daisy chained off the back of a dock. just to give me the same storage i enjoy, and in future im sure ill be expanding it as HDD prices come down further per tb. I only use the laptop for doing presentations to clients, or to do the occasional on the fly edit in a clients premises.Currently theres 32GB in this machine, when i change the board soon and put in a i9 10850K ill be putting in a pair of 970 evo plus, and 64gb of ram.as already this machine is getting slow, both in macos and win 10 to be handling some of the file sizes and filters i am trying to run on it.

How much ram in your Z390 system is adequate for your workflow ?

I have the same amount of tabs open as I had on the 2012 mini. The same type of usage between those two machines. I'm not worried about the SSD, I believe Apple will kill the support for the machine long before the SSD dies. if I had known that 8GB Apple memory is bull I would have bought the 16GB model but now with those shipping delays waiting for the 16GB machine would be at least a couple of months if not more.

32GB on Z390. But I use the hack for more serious work. Large photoshop files, 3D etc. M1 mini is a living room computer. A toy that I use for streaming, music, browsing the net.
