Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

I had RAM stability issues with some of the older versions of BIOS. Even standard XMP was unstable. F9l has been solid.

I've done handbrake conversions overnight with my overclock on F9l where I queued up 4-5 videos to be converted and no problems.

Yeah, I had problems with my BIOS updates and my mobo -- GB Z390 Gaming X. I'm still stuck on F10g beta because when I went to F10h, the system wouldn't boot if XMP was engaged. IIRC, my XMP is at 3600. I found that if I used the XMP timings but manually ratcheted the speed down to 3400, it would work.

The handbrake would "choke" only on certain files. If I adjusted the codec to primarily use my dGPU, it would usually get through the file, but then there were files that wouldn't convert with either the overclocked iGPU or dGPU. In the end, I just put it back to stock. I might try playing around with it again.

I'm actually wrestling with a 6900XT. It's one of the newer XTXH cards that I have to spoof with the old device-id. The latest OpenCore with WEG is supposed to allow this to be done easily but I can't get it work for some reason.

Yes. That sounds pretty much exactly the RAM issues I was having!

One method I used to test for RAM stability was to run Geekbench 5 consecutively 15-20 times. If RAM was unstable, Geekbench would randomly end right near the end and not output the benchmark results.

Unfortunately, I don't have an RDNA2 card to mess with... I refuse to pay the current inflated prices.

@scottkendall, I don't want to discuss about sense or non-sense of overclocking. I want to see, what is possible (with overclocking) to decide, if it's worth. The overclocking-ability of the 9900K was the reason for me to buy it.
Go for it overclock it all you want I never said don't do it. However, the gains you will get are so marginal that you would only notice if you run bench marks, but you would never know the difference in the real world. 1 or 2 FPS gaming, 5 or 10 sec off your over all encoding time, 1 or 2 seconds off a renderings. The point I was making is a more stable over clock is not worth problematic TB3, or overall system stability. I have a 9900k and I bought it with no intention of Over clocking it; I bought it only because I like to know that I could over click it if I wanted to.

Yes, this was also my intention. My overclocking tests are to see, what‘s possible. If I find a stable configuration, maybe I use it. In BIOS I have a default config saved for daily usage and a overclocked config, to activate if I want.

If RAM was unstable, Geekbench would randomly end right near the end and not output the benchmark results.
Yes, this spontaneous ends I know too. :problem: By the way my BIOS denied to load your configuration with the message, that is a configuration from another version. But I have installed the F9l BIOS, you post here.

Thanks, this config is loadable. Like expected, the system shuts immediatly down, if it gets under load. But I will analyze the config and maybe I get it to with some modifications.

At the moment I work on the opposite: Undervolting. I have reduced the temperatures while running prime95 torture test by nearly 15 degrees. :)

I delidded my CPU to improve cooling.

I think that you won't be able to overclock if you undervolt. There should be a bit of headroom for undervolting if you keep stock clock speeds.

With the F9m I got the system stable running with 5.2 Ghz for 1&2 core turbo and 4.8 Ghz for all core turbo in combination of a slightly undervolting. Without undervolting it wasn‘t stable. Now on the F9l I run very often in the memory issue (Geekbench & prime95 quits immediatly). I think, this is what the F9m fixes. :(

And I know, my overclocking capabilities are very limited, because the CPU is not delidded and I have no liquid cooling. The system uses the classical G5 cooling concept with 4 80mm fans and the Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT CPU cooler.

My RAM stable with F9l. I don't see the unexpected quits anymore.

I don't use liquid coolers. I just have a good ol' fashioned Noctua.
