Hi,

I was wondering if the RX 640 could possibly be compatible with Mac OS Big Sur? I couldn't find much information. I think it's sharing the same device ID as the RX 550 but I wouldn't be able to confirm it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there is no way to build a working hackintosh on a PC with Intel 11th gen and only IGPU. That's correct?

Thanks!
James

i have moved your post to graphics section

If the RX 640 uses a Lexa chip like a lot of RX 550's then it won't work in macOS.

If it uses the Baffin chip, then it will work.

I can't find any information on the Desktop dGPU, just the mobile version, so can't tell what chip it uses.

Spot-on about the Lexa / Baffin difference.

I believe the Baffin RX550's had either 512 or 640 shaders whereas their bigger brother the RX560 had 896.

Not looked into the spec of the Lexa chip because it's not compatible for our use.

The latest RX560's use newer Baffin / Polaris 21 chips with 1024 shaders, I think. (Happy to be corrected). Interestingly these new generation chips were also used for Apple's Radeon Pro 555 GPUs that were in iMacs like the iMac18,2 etc., but with their shader count reduced to 768 ...

All this ruminating makes me wonder if the OP has seen a typo - RX 460 perhaps? Those are compatible and similar to the early RX560's and had 896 or 1024 shaders. Like you, I've never seen a desktop RX640.

As I understand things the RX 600 series of cards were released by AMD to reinvigorate the sale of the low end Polaris cards, some time in 2019. But most of these chips seem to have found their way in to laptops.

The RX 640 Mobile uses Polaris 23 chip according to TechPowerUp - https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/?generation=Mobility+Radeon&sort=generation.

I assume the same chip would be used in the Desktop version. So the card is neither a Lexa or Baffin chipped card.

The OP would need to install the card and see what happens, no way for us to know for sure if it will work before someone installs the card in a Hack.

I'd like to see an RX640 PCIe GPU. Perhaps the OP would be kind enough to upload a photo?

They are about as common as a hen's tooth or a nine dollar bill.

Thanks to everyone for trying to answer my question. I wish I could provide more details. The thing is I was considering buying this computer and we can customize it prior buying. I'm allowed to pick between 10th and 11th Intel gen and also stick with IGPU or get the RX 640.

Giving the computer size, I would guess it's more a mobile GPU version than a desktop.

I would with the 10th Gen IPGU. Don’t bother with the RX640 especially if it is a mobile chip.

The 11th gen IGPU is not supported in macOS. It may never be supported if Apple stick with their ARM system on a chip (SOC).

Well that's interesting. Their options menu shows:

RX640.png

... which lists the GPU as "LP" usually taken to mean "Low Profile". So maybe some kind of OEM Dell card?

Every picture tells a story, as they say:

... definitely looks like room for an add-on card there.

A couple of years ago details emerged of an RX550 refresh to include the RX630 and RX640 - and yes, you are correct, the RX640 specifically had the same device-ID as the RX550. It was limited to either 512 or 640 shader units so is clearly related.

This is the first time I've seen one of them being actually used. So I live and learn.

Incidentally the total power output of the Dell PSU is listed as only 65-Watts which implies the use of a mobile-chipset, but I'm confused as to how they can offer CPU choices which include 65-watt i5, i7 and i9 models. o_O

So, as the original question of the thread was - is the RX 640 Big Sur compatible? - I's say "Unknown".

And 11th gen iGPUs are not supported in macOS.

As for Hackintosh-compatible Buying Advice, which the thread turned into, personally I'd steer clear.
